I opted for "hard to obtain license", but I'd like to expand the system by regular revision of the license holder's aptitude and psychological suitability. Not everyone can be trusted with a firearm. Not everyone should be trusted with a car, which is why I'd like to see such a system there as well.

Of course, this ignores the non-constant cross-sectional first moment of area across the chest as well as non-constant material properties of the boob; it would be difficult to perform a more detailed analysis (as in, I'd have to have a shape function AND I'd need to derive a function for elastic modulus as a function of lateral breast coordinate) but whatever. It's 2am and I'm lazy.

I always believed science should be very hands on experience.

You should also answer this question I had posed in that thread: Would you be willing to pay your surgeon more if he was going to use a chainsaw for the opening incision of surgery? Clearly using a chainsaw isn't truly suited for surgery but that doesn't really matter. If he's "skilled" enough to be able to use the wrong tools of the trade, he should be rewarded for that skill right?

I like guns.

There needs to be a new option in the poll: all weapons should be freely available to those who do not have a mental predisposition toward psychosis or murderous tendencies.

It is constitutionally enumerated that all citizens should have the right to bear arms. This extends from handguns to GPMGs, in my book.

LOL you need medicine man. I don't want any subs as i just have a google account for other media and writing comments. Think twice before you act. You even said in your video you aren't that great of a player, and the comments agree you aren't. Maybe you should once again think twice before you act, stop being such an annoying, ignorant bastard that everyone wants to shut up, and god, literally, just shut up. Please adequately answer these questions:
What gives another person the right to tell me what I can and cannot own?
How many crimes are committed by "gun nuts" versus those involved in already illegal activities? (Gang members and the like)
If laws were to be passed making firearms illegal, how would existing firearms be removed from the country?
How many lives are saved because of firearms in civilian hands?
Are guns the source of crime? Will removing them from the hands of those who are willing to give them up actually reduce crime?

Here is a source of raw statistics with no analysis, for you guys.

Personally I think it should be tougher to get a gun here in the states -- not tough enough so that the average joe can't get one, but tough enough to keep them out of the hands of the mentally ill (i.e. enough for Wayne LaPierre to die from a severe case of hives -- allergic to not getting his way, such a sad case). Universal background checks and psych evals would be a good place to start.

@The McGoat
your numbers are out of date. 2010 is well before the gun rushes that were sparked every time someone so much as whispered "gun control" in the general vicinity of the NRA. Also well before the doomsday prepper fad and before people like James Holmes, Adam Lanza and Dylann Roof became household names.
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?

Please adequately answer these questions you asked:
What gives another person the right to tell me what I can and cannot own? Majority vote
How many crimes are committed by "gun nuts" versus those involved in already illegal activities? (Gang members and the like) rather few, but I don't think that's an argument
If laws were to be passed making firearms illegal, how would existing firearms be removed from the country? See Australia. Will most likely be a bit more difficult in the U.S.
How many lives are saved because of firearms in civilian hands? Unknown number. How do we know that lives would be lost had the (sometimes presumed) attacker not been shot or forced into submission? If only one life is "saved" by killing the attacker, the answer is "none".
Are guns the source of crime? Will removing them from the hands of those who are willing to give them up actually reduce crime? It may not reduce crime, but it may very well reduce the lethality of crimes.

I don't care for opinions.

Participating in a society imposes rules on the self. Living in a society only permits you the rights that you, and your society-mates, permit yourself and one another. If you live in a cave in the mountains, feel free to do whatever you want. Choosing to exist within a society is what defines what is acceptable and what you are free to do vs. what you are free from.

.

As for gun nuts vs. people purchasing guns to protect themselves while performing illegal activities, it mostly comes down to a question of WHY the weapon was purchased in the first place, which is where it gets very complicated.

This correlation is difficult to pursue due to something in sociology called "labeling theory." Long story short, people who do actions which others view as in line with one stereotype are more likely to perform additional actions to match said stereotype. For example, one cannot state whether owning a gun makes an individual more likely to hurt others or whether a predisposition to violence leads an individual to own a gun. It's a difficult question to answer.

This is also more or less irrelevant, in my opinion, but then again, I'm in the camp of "no one should own guns no matter what their excuse is" so who is purchasing weapons is irrelevant to me.

.

I'm not sure HOW best to remove weapons. I'd like to see guns as permissble to be turned in voluntarily for the first few months followed by warrants and police raids (requiring significant amounts of evidence, of course) starting 4-5 months after a ban is passed.

Were a gun ban to be passed how I would like, antiques and collectible items in nonfiring condition would be permissible (eg in museum displays) but those are about the only exceptions.

.

DoJ data from 2012/13 stated that for each "justifiable" death to guns (self-defense, justifiable police shooting) in the United States, roughly 110 people died in "unjustifiable" ways (suicide, murder, accidents). This, of course, excludes shootings in which people are injured rather than killed, which muddles these numbers significantly. I found widely varying estimates for those numbers when I was looking around right after the Charleston church massacre.

The FBI-UCR program in 2012 found that there were 32 homicides per every situation in which a gun was appropriately used in self-defense (8342 homicides vs. 259 defensive shootings). This excludes suicides and accidental deaths--these comprise the majority of gun-related deaths in America.

.

This comes down to the labeling theory problem--do people who perform shootings murder people because they a) own guns or b) are predisposed to violence? Obviously, the two seem to correlate fairly well here in America.

Many countries have enacted gun bans and they experienced significantly fewer shootings after the ban than before. Wikipedia's summary is excellent.
Overview of gun laws by nation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
List of countries by firearm-related death rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It's a very mixed issue. The countries with very strict restrictions tend to have very low death rates...but we only have a few data points to go off of.

.

I follow the common-sense logic of "you can't shoot someone if you don't own a gun." I tend to lean towards 'less freedoms and more safety' when it comes to laws. Many Americans tend to lean towards 'more freedoms and less safety.'

.

A solid thanks to Goat for guiding the conversation. Now we have somewhere to go with this. :)

What gives another person the right to tell me what I can and cannot own?

Laws and the policemen enforcing them.
How many crimes are committed by "gun nuts" versus those involved in already illegal activities? (Gang members and the like)

If laws were to be passed making firearms illegal, how would existing firearms be removed from the country?

Mandatory 'turn in' locations. Afterwards, personal house visits by police agents armed with necessary equipment as to make sure most of it is gun. All while making posession of firearms as a whole illegal for those that get caught with them after the big sweep.
How many lives are saved because of firearms in civilian hands?

Less than are taken.
Are guns the source of crime? Will removing them from the hands of those who are willing to give them up actually reduce crime?

No. Yes.

Second post because I feel like it warrants separation. I stumbled onto an interesting concept in one of Project Itoh's novels a while back.

Freedom isn't an absolute scale. There are two kinds of freedom, freedom to do something and freedom from something. You cannot be more free; one goes up as the other goes down.

For example, consider a society which is debating the legality of murder. In a society which has more 'do' freedom, murder will be legal, but you'll spend your entirely life worrying about being killed. In a society which has more 'from' freedom, extreme steps to prevent violence will be taken--you'll spend your life free from these worries.

There is no "more and less" free, just "more free from" versus "more free to do."

.

I tend to lean towards less free 'to do.' I would rather have a government which restricted my actions but offered me greater protections.

This is based on a completely different concept of freedom which isn't on many people's radars though.

As a gun owner, im gonna drop my 5 cents here.
Here in Finland we have strict gunlaws. You get one for hunting or for target practice/ sport or in rare cases for military reserve purposes. In order to gain a licence police will check your background for possible crimes( even speeding tickets matter) and also if you have links to organised crime. Then you need to specify for what you want the gun for. Then you get checked for mental stability. You get intervieved by the licence giving countys police officer. And this is only for buying.

After you get the licence to buy you need a licence to carry. If the weapon you bought does not match the use or is just somehow illegal you will lose the said gun before they give you the licence. Personally I think this is good because officials keep gunowners on a leash and it helps to decrease crime. People who have guns have a use for it and thats it. You dont get gun just to own one.

I like the laws we have. I have went through the bureucracy 8 times and i regret nothing.
