I has no sources for this, but I have other websites to add. Give me a sec

Edit: http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/201…ost-gun-deaths/
This statistic is a difficult one as one could argue "well they'd have killed themselves anyway." However, as someone who went through a major period of intense depression, I would be dead right now if I had access to a gun. It's so quick, so easy, so painless... Most other methods are painful, scary, or worse: can leave you alive but mentally handicapped. Yes, a gun CAN leave you alive thanks to modern medicine. But if you know where to aim it, it almost certainly won't.

Though I favor strict gun control and acknowledge that gun murders are very high in the United States, I feel like our culture is also more prone towards violence as a manner of resolution--this has nothing to do with access to guns and isn't something that would change if guns were banned.

Wikipedia's summary of gun-related deaths and gun control laws is really well-done, if you want to look into that.

Is that how crime and justice are viewed in the rest of the world?

Most act based on logic more than regulations.

If there is an assault going on at a bar, you don't expect nearby gun nuts to all pull out their fully legel concealed carry semi-auto military grade ar15's. You simply call the police. Usually they will be there within 5 minutes (in the meantime, multiple people can hold down the bad guy). Once the police arrives they will deal with it. Firearms will be brought if the bad guy is said to be a firearm risk.

If a hostage were to happen, a mass police force will gather fully armed with pistols. They will usually surround the building, and let a special force unit get into the building. This is what happened on a news station here a while ago.
You do not, however, bring an 'old' 120mm shell firing tank to the scene.

Justice is based on the law. Terms and conditions do apply. If the person is deemed mentally ill (like, seriously ill) they usually get put in a mental hospital. For other cases there may be 'softening' elements. Usually it's not the work of only one person. Things like mental abuse, drug use, etc definetily play a role. But politics have fuck all to do with that, as compared to the situation in the US where the public view and media attention heavily influences the juridical precedure.

Other than that, I'm not sure what else you mean with that question.

That's not exactly what I mean. I mean, in America, people think that people should be locked up in jail just to suffer. Not to fix them, not to make them thinking about what they've done--it is assumed that making people suffer is justice. Even if the criminal gets out and does it again, he has received his fair 'punishment' and 'suffered equally.' I think that it's a flawed mindset (repeat criminals are a problem here).

oh i see what you mean... yeah, as part of americanization, we're slowly starting to get like that as well, but for now it's still a controlled phenomenon.

@Pastafarianism

just because there are more gun crimes, it doesn't mean there's more crimes in general, violent crime rates(knifes, punches and other similar things as well as rape) are much higher in europe than in usa, i remember reading something between 4 to 7.8 per 100k person some time ago, but things might have changed as well as i might remember incorrectly.

Right?! And isn't that sickening??? Like right now (I am quoting Drift0r), "prison is college for criminals." It's so fucking true! We need to make prison a learning experience, not a "YOU DID BAD NOW WE PUT YOU IN BAD PLACE" scenario.

I meant in terms of justice being synonymous with punishment rather than rehabilitation.

Why would only one of those apply?

If you fucked up, you deserve to get punished. Simply as that. But for the sake of reducing the risk of you fucking up again (for the other peoples' sake), actions should be taken as well. This can be done through simple negative repercussions (whether they're financial/social/etc), making it harder for the people to get the tools back they need for their bad act (like car-related things), and through (re-)education.
When someone is given a punishment, however, they also take into account what the risks are of you going back at it. If someone is deemed a lifelong risk, where the previously named things will not be likely to work, that person will usually get the maximum penalty (in several ways) possible.

Personally, I don't see this as a very hard thing to grasp. I am honestly surprised you brought it up in your question (also being why I didn't think you were aiming at this sort of thing). Are there actually debates going on about this basic stuff over there?

There aren't debates. Prison and justice are viewed exclusively as things to punish. There's no concept of them being used for anything else back home and people don't want to talk about our incredibly flawed penal system (out of sight, out of mind). Most people agree that it's screwed up but don't want to change it because fixing it would involve increasing taxes.

Also, we have gotten WAY off-topic.
