Gun Control Discussion

In the vein of making a serious thread, what are y'all's opinions on gun control? This is one of the discussions that I wanted to have here because we have people from so many backgrounds but Rule12 prevented me from doing so.

i don't ike how things are in the usa where basically any american that is barely 18 yo can get a gun without problems, but i hate even more how it is in italy where getting a gun license for hunting is extremely hard, and getting one for personal defence it's basically impossible, there should a mix of the two.(thus easy to get license, but still, a license, not just owning it like it was an airsoft gun)

honestly, i think there should be a heavy restriction on handguns here in the usa. Probably never should have been made legal for civilians to own. Other than that, I think all the laws are in the right places. Even if they do make obtaining certain things unneccesarily difficult in very specific circumstances

Why should anyone in the USA be interested in changing the gun control. Its EZ money to earn and the military is an enormous economical factor.

Beside if gun control would be made more difficult, its almost impossible to execute, due to the sheer amount of weapons. So many illegal weapons increase the fear in public and therefore the demand for Easy-to-obtain gun licenses increases. In the end it would be like nothing has changed.

If your country has a violence problem up to the point where firearms are deemed necessary as a form of 'self defense', while also creating a national hivemind of how public access to said weaponry is not a blatantly dangerous thing (!!!), the very last thing you need to be doing is to let licenses be given to any 18+ citizen and make ammo purchaseable in a supermarket.
Control of said weaponry, instead, should be the next step. Along with a national re-education of both policemen and citizens on how to act when you see someone is being assaulted.

The firearms aren't the problem, the people are. Especially the part where the people let their 'thresholds' (i.e. what do I do? Gotta fight back!) get lowered by the mass presence of firearms.

@iota ... Are you the one with a mental disability rent? In your case its of course difficult and I completely support that.

i am, but i wasn't talking about me, i was talking in general, apart from politics or people that have matters to do with law, i've never heard or seen someone with a personal defence gun permit, be it because people don't think it's needed(herp-a-derp, if i don't have a gun why would my attacker have one?) or -in the case of somewhat intelligent people- they just can't get one for various reasons.

in my case i probably won't even be able to ever hold a real gun in the first place, but honestly i'm fine in just using airsoft guns, as long as i can count on my tutors for proper defense, which would never happen with the actual gun laws present in italy*.

=or at least what i know about them.

italians are generally anti-guns because they get extremely affected by what gets filtered of the american news, so when a mass-shooting or isis stuff gets on our tv-news, people just get more and more anti-guns, the only good events that happened in the last 10 years iirc, is the one where an hunter saved the day at a bank robbery when he was returning home after a hunt.

our country never thinks something by themselves, they're just there looking at other countries saying "you shuld do this!!" "you do this? you shouldn't do that" "you do it like that? then we should as well!" so basically most of our laws really depends on what other countries deicde, and more importantly what we hear about those same countries trough TG1(rai news).

Well, America does have a police militarization problem (our police tends to get its hands on a lot of old Army hardware) which tends to make people paranoid. That said, a lot of people like having a police force that doesn't mind resorting to violence easily. In America, we view lawbreaking as something that requires punishment rather than something that warrants rehabilitation. I personally dislike this viewpoint but it's very pervasive, especially in the deep south.

Is that how crime and justice are viewed in the rest of the world?

Let's ban pointy knives and broken glass also.

The issue with guns isn't that they can be used for a single murder--it's not too hard to use, say, a baseball bat to kill someone. The problem is that it is far more easier to perform muder sprees with guns than with other weapons. Point -> dead, point -> dead makes it far easier to kill large numbers of people than run up -> bludgeon for a minute, run up -> bludgeon for a minute.

The idea of a gun ban is more about avoiding large-scale violence than it is about stopping single murders.

italy views lawbreaking as something that must be rehabilited yes, but there is a huge problem of over-populization of jails, even though a lot of the condemned have only few years to spend in a cell, thus, iirc they announced they'll start to give death penalty again, so much that there is no space.

i also think this problem comes from the fact that police here is though to never shoot to kill, namely injury but possibly not.

an example that comes to mind, a couple months ago some guy shot his whole family with a shotgun(he apparently collected guns, but i don't remember if they were legal or not, most likely most of them weren't, at least those not depicted for hunting), then, he got out of the balcony shooting everyone on sight, as well as a policeman, when other policeman shot at him, they didn't get him once, even if they shot at least one mag of a pdw(whose name i can't remember, looks like the m4 spectre) in 2, at a distance of around 30 meters at max.

i doubt that cops would miss that many pbullets at that range, thus i believe their orders were "scare him with fire until we can get inside" or something like that, if the orders were "incapacitate him" or better "kill him" we wouldn't have had a lot of problems regarding that case, mainly, jail population and deaths.

as for mass-scale cases, people can just get illegal guns or bombs, we too had various of those problems in italy in the last year or so.

That's not exactly what I mean. I mean, in America, people think that people should be locked up in jail just to suffer. Not to fix them, not to make them thinking about what they've done--it is assumed that making people suffer is justice. Even if the criminal gets out and does it again, he has received his fair 'punishment' and 'suffered equally.' I think that it's a flawed mindset (repeat criminals are a problem here).

America has some dumb stuff going on with private prisons--state governments sell prisons to corporations which establish a contract requiring that the prison be X% full at all times. It's not uncommon for nonviolent small-time offenders to get large prison sentences. For example, having a single marijuana plant on your property (even if it is not yours and was planted by, say, a neighbor) carries a federal minimum sentence of five years. Many states have their own minimums for something that small, some on the scale of 20+ years. The state HAS to keep the prisons full so we lock up a lot of people for dumb/small-scale things. It's all in the name of lower taxes.

I think America's more or less unique in having a system that screwed up though.
