I felt I was in space when I was banging your mum.

Atheist. This picture describes it perfectly.

#1 There's no "up" in space.
#2 You've never been to space.

Religion 1 - 0 Science

Yes, but the enemy's gate is "down." (Ender's Game, anyone?)

.

On-topic, atheist. Provide me with evidence of a god or something and I'll believe it at such time as those claims have survived peer review.

I had a very interesting conversation with a friend doing research in quantum mechanics about religion. "The central assumption of the laws of physics is that the laws of physics have always remained constant"--eg, we can't prove that the total amount of energy in the universe has always been X but we assume so. If this was not true (as far as we can tell, it's constant today, but we don't have data going back a billion or so years) for all time then there's space, per quantum theory, to mathematically account for miracles.

Then there's all that "we don't know what happened in the millionth of a second after the big bang" stuff.

So I suppose physics accounts for the possibility of a god of some kind but without reproducible evidence I'm going to be very hard to convince one way or another.

.

he also missed the four celestian cpu religions, one of which is lowee-ism to which i was part of some time ago, pasta really messed up this time...

yup.

btw i'm agnostic just because i don't want to miss on anything... basically my beliefs are based on my personality, meaning that i don't really have a reason to believe or not, i just go with the flow of things, and when someone will be able to prove one truth, i'll follow that one.

Uh, there is no large scale energy conservation.

Exactly. Like Lavoisier once said, "Nothing is lost, nothing is transformed, everything is created."

Exactly. Like Lavoisier once said, "Nothing is lost, nothing is transformed, everything is created."

Lavoisier was wrong. Energy is conserved locally, but there is no large-scale energy conservation.

In field theory, conserved energy is defined via Noether's theorem as arising from time translation invariance. There is no such thing in general relativity. For stationary spacetimes (the metric admits a timelike Killing vector) we can define a conserved energy in terms of the Komar integral. For asymptotically flat spacetimes, there exist multiple notions of energy, mainly ADM and Bondi (corresponding to symmetries on different parts of conformal infinity).

Indeed, dark energy violates energy conservation. In the currently accepted theory, dark energy takes the form of a cosmological constant term in Einstein's equations. Let us call this energy density E. Now suppose the volume of the universe is V. Then the "dark energy" of the universe is EV. Suppose that the universe grows to some other volume V'>V. Then the dark energy of the expanded universe is EV'>EV. Voila, we have violated energy conservation.

(If you don't like that, just use the fact that photons are redshifted in an expanding universe, thus their energy decreases.)

To be fair, he said that in a conversation which he dumbed-down a little for the sake of people present (one of whom was doing lit). It's quite possible that I misunderstood what he meant.
