Going to keep this thread somewhat productive... If anyone else needs these in the future, or is looking for a solid anti-malware program that is free, use these:

Malwarebytes | Free Anti-Malware & Internet Security Software

And for a second opinion: HitmanPro 3 - SurfRight

If you think a link is shady, or even if you just want to be careful after this whole thing, you can check URL links with this website. Simply switch to the URL tab, copy and paste in the URL, and then make sure you force it to update its scan, as the website may not have been checked recently.

This is an example of a well done virus, but of course, the obvious ones to look out for are any websites ending in .tk, .cf, .ga, .gq, or .ml.

And lastly, don't be an idiot, always have Windows Defender on. It's free, it's there when you install Windows, and it's low-impact on performance but serves as a final line of defense if ever needed.

I never heard about Defender doing anything. But it might help some if you aren't exactly and IT guy I guess.

I had some weird problems last year where I was frequently getting some automated reminders from our ISP about some virus communicating from our IP address. I was going nuts, because no matter what I did, I never found anything. I used like 5 different tools to scan all of our PCs, I even installed full ESET and used it until the trial expired. Malwarebytes, specific tools (more than one) for that particular trojan (I think), nothing ever found anything. And I was still getting those shitty mails and had internet access blocked for brief moments. I even went as far as looking into the possibility of either the NAS or the router being somehow infected, but it turned false as well. I engaged in lenghty "discussion" with the incompetent monkey sitting in the ISP's office, and eventually concluded it was always a false alarm. I still do, however after some time I got so pissed off I reinstalled the OS on my PC, and surprisingly, never got a single warning since. It's been several months now.
I don't really know what to think, and even though I don't know much about all the security stuff at all, I believe I can keep my shit together. And yet, there's some evidence that maybe...
The reason I wrote this wall of text is that if you absolutely want to be sure your system is clean, you MUST reinstall (and reformat - never ever simply install the OS over the previous installation) the system. There are no exceptions whatsoever.

@Octopuss

All very true. And for getting rid of a virus, sometimes the only way is a complete clean install of OS. The more important step is making sure you never get a virus in the first place. In a lot of cases you can run without any anti-virus software provided you know what to look for, and a lot of that can't necessarily be taught to other people because it's always changing.

On another note, even though its customer service has taken a pretty sharp decline, the free version of Avast! is still very good. I just recommend not buying the premium version like my dad did. Because unless you know how to call a lady on bullshit about normal windows errors that cannot (and don't need to be) fixed, they will nickel and dime you to death.

"It will only cost you $99 for us to remove all of these errors from your computer, sir" -- That conversation was on speakerphone, big mistake for the woman on the other end who was remote controlling my dads PC.

As for Windows Defender... It's not a super great system, but it's there, and it's not like you have to go out of your way to use it because it's turned on by default. Having more chances to catch something is always better.

If you know some basic stuff, it's really not that difficult to keep your system clean. I haven't used any antivirus for over 10 years, and this was the first time I had any problems (and not even very convincing). I still wouldn't suggest to do this for most people, though :P When I have some money to spare, I will buy ESET SS for the house anyway (it's not even that expensive if you buy multilicense for 3 years). Better safe than sorry.

As for Windows Defender... It's not a super great system

That's why i disabled it along with Windows' firewall.

Hrm, seems like this is bit more widespread than I originally thought. One of my steam friend's account just tried to do the same to me.

Only one of the virustotal's scans return as malwareish so this seems rather fresh.
Links to users' thread list who have made analytical/statistical/mathematical/cool posts on Symthic:
  • 3VerstsNorth - Analysis of game mechanics in BF4 (tickrates, effects of tickrate, etc)
  • leptis - Analysis of shotguns, recoil, recoil control and air drag.
  • Veritable - Scoring of BF4/BF1 firearms in terms of usability, firing and other mechanics.
  • Miffyli - Random statistical analysis of BF4 battlereports/players and kill-distances. (list is cluttered with other threads).
Sorry if your name wasn't on the list, I honestly can't recall all names : ( . Nudge me if you want to be included

Things people said

And reading Youtube comments still gives me Turbo Cancer.

It really is quite frustrating when Helen Keller sets up her LMG in the only doorway in/out of an area.

What kind of question is that? Since when is cheese ever a bad idea?
