I feel like we're not forgiving enough to the new guys though. It's like we gang up on them immediately. There are tons of examples, go look at previous locked threads. That's just me being a softie, to be honest.

I do agree that if a new member comes in acting like he knows more than anyone else for whatever reason, that needs to be corrected. However, on more than one occasion, I've seen new members outright insulted before they even make a second post. That is my concern.
I was one of the "new" people who got insulted before I made any aggressive comments at all.

@theaha
I don't expect to be unbanned in the near future. I know that my activity on a second account can definitely be viewed as wrong, but I felt it was necessary. Regardless, on the topic of ToTheSun, as he hasn't had a post reported in a long time, neither have I. What I'm questioning is the impartiality here. Everyone who harassed me was never touched, and despite my moderate conduct, along with my tenure and contributions, I was never given any special consideration.

Yes, but <banned member> has been banned for longer and it's my impression that his alternate account is new news. He has served longer without incident.

Got to agree with legacy members getting away from a certain constancy in posts regarded as "unappropriated". I'm mostly inclined to think that the combination of bad examples and lack of visible punishment serve as attraction towards these kind of posts.... while on the other hand, you get people trying to argue against the most recently agreed-upon mechanics with little to none required knowledge over people tired of reposting the same explainations 10 times a week.

It doesn't matter that he was "good" while posting under a second account. Thats a flat out rule break. and posting while banned equals ban.

its really simple. I could care less if he was the most productive member during this time. He still broke the main rule of being banned. ie Not serving your time.

Its really a laughable matter. "I broke the rules but look you didn't even know it was me. I should be welcomed back!"

If thats the case whats the point of a ban?

(As Nick)
Soup did something one person noticed and connected with the site. And I don't believe he was asking for hacks. He even says that he was trying to keybind buttons to his mouse. Very different from a hack. Please don't exaggerate.

Sun posted porn on the site. More than one person noticed. It was very public and we try to be professional.

I'd say that Soup's offense was greater in size, BUT it had a smaller impact because it wasn't as public.

*Sigh* Alright.. This is just a lot to try and reply to, i'll try to keep it short, i'm only going to reply to points made by both Nick and formerly-Soup.

My point of view is highly influenced by the fact that I was, once upon a time, a moderator for another website, related to an old community I was in a few years ago. I know what the Moderators here deal with to an extent, but they deal with more of it, as they have more members to moderate.

The first thing I would like to bring up is the commonly used 3-strike rule, which I know for a fact is used on this website. To my knowledge, all of the bans that have taken place in the last few months have taken place in proper fashion using the warning system, except for Soup's ban, which is a special case, and i'll explain that more later. The 3-strike rule is a very good way of enforcing rules on forums like these. They give more than ample warning to members who do break the rules regularly, and in fact I still believe that the rule is much too lenient. Using Toshiro's ban for an example, it was brought up that he was banned because he wasn't well liked, instead of actually breaking rules. While I will be the first person to admit that I absolutely hated seeing him post, that did not affect me reporting his posts when I did so; rule breaking did, usually posting false information, or something totally off topic to the subject at hand, this is true of anyone I report, and I would hope it is true of all members, that reports are done based on the forum rules rather than popularity.

Secondly, I will also admit that I am on the more hostile side when speaking on the forums in most cases. I do not limit this to new members, in fact I try to avoid my condescending tone with new forum members, and direct it more towards the senior members who should know better anyways. My posts become hostile when someone posts blatantly false information that is available on the Symthic website. Symthic provides the resources needed in most cases to be able to research a question on your own, and then be more informed when discussing the topic on the forums. The game files and stats are not there as a fall back, they are there as a reference, one to be used when talking about anything technical that has to do with Battlefield 4, or any game handled by this community. When someone posts using false information, i'm very irritated by it, because I know for a fact (and if I don't, I check to make sure it was there) that the person could have checked their facts before starting a discussion over incorrect statements. Instead, they simply bring the issue to the forums and expect other people to look up this information for them, which is usually the case for what happens. Mind you, this paragraph is referring only to the hostility shown in mine, and some other members posts, not in general. If an issue comes up where the answer is not known, obviously some of the things said will be incorrect, but that is to be expected from something described as 'Game Science'. A chemist would get pissed off if you told them the atomic weight of Hydrogen is 44, when there is a periodic table hanging on a wall in front of you.

On the issue of Soup's ban. I believe that in that case what he did was something that put the reputation of the entire Symthic website and name in jeopardy. In that case I entirely agree with how is ban was handled, and I was happy that it was made very clear that he, using the Symthic name, was no longer affiliated with us, to make sure that the reputation we have all worked so very hard to gain, was not lost based on the actions of one individual.

Lastly, I want to talk about this whole mod bias thing that people have gotten hung up on recently.

1. Yes, a lot of the moderators now are Team Symthic members.
2. Yes, Team Symthic talks a lot in Teamspeak, those moderators included.
3. Yes, we give our input on threads that pop up here through TS.
4. Ultimately no, that does not affect the decisions that the moderators make.

You have to understand that a lot of times when a forum topic from these forums ends up being discussed on our teamspeak, it is us pointing out to the mods something that obviously needs locked, or in most cases at least moderated. They are not on call on the forums 24/7, they are much easier to reach on teamspeak, so if an issue comes up, we can point it out much faster than if someone were to report it then wait for it to be seen by a moderator. More often than not, I consult Labby in certain situations if I am talking about game mechanics I know nothing about, primarily helicopters and PDW's. He tells me what is correct and what is not, and I base my post off of what information I can gather from him, I do not go to him and say "This thread needs locked, lock it now." Unless it's a K*tchen thread, because I have pointed out quite a few of those to our Symthic moderators.

Hope that clears some of the fog around the way some of us act, and why we do so, there is no conspiracy, sorry everyone.

That's not what I'm asking (and what he's asking). Why was he banned for longer for an offense that impacted the site less? The existence of his alt was irrelevant until today.

Please stop avoiding the issue.
