Nick goes to PC--Halp pls?

So I'm planning on building a PC in the near future (possibly as early as January, depending on my schedule and wallet) but I have no idea what I'm doing. What should I know (assume I know nothing atm, because I basically don't)?

EDIT: Not posted in computer thread because computer thread is a little technical for me at the moment.

Every other configuration is "fundamentally" the same, but they do have some quirks. Most of it are also idiot proof so I think it's going to be a breeze for you.

If you want a good pc for a very affordable price go with AMD.
And come on, 2400 Mhz RAM? You don't need it.

First of all you need to know your budget.
I assume you will also need a monitor, so decide on the screen size, too.
Then you need to decide if you want "performance" or quality when it comes to monitor.

And after THAT we can help out ;)

Exactly, 1600Mhz or 1800Mhz sticks will do the same. 8GB will be enough for gaming if you don't do heavier stuff.
Also I'd recommend Intel, i5s are perfect for gaming in my opinion.

We totally don't have a thread or anything about this in the same subforum or anything. Or anything.

Budget, do you have the peripherals?, ect...

Also, you start to see less than worthwhile returns for RAM above 2133 MHz, so in you case stick to 1600-1800 MHz.

I wouldn't go down to 1600MHz, but you also typically don't see any gains above that speed either (unless you're Rezal), BUT at the same time, memory is (or at least I think) dirt cheap, so you might as well get faster.

lol, nope. Same pack of ram I brought last summer increased in price by 2.5 times what I brought it at. It's cheap compared to other components in the PC, but still has a significant cost.

BF4 may be an exception for AMD CPUs Battlefield 4 Retail GPU and CPU Benchmarks the 8 core vishneras actually outperform the I5s. probably because of more cores. the CPU isn't likely to be a bottle neck anyway so it might not be a bad idea to go with a less expensive cpu if you can spend the money in a better area. It's probably helpful to know how much your going to spend then optimize the build for your budget.

a few things to consider: Some people use TVs with their PCs. results can vary wildly.
SSDs will make general computing much snappier and increase your load speeds (nice if you want to grab a vehicle at the beginning of the round) but aren't going to normally effect your game performance.
AMD and nvidia GPUs both are good and have their strong points.

It may be a good idea to spend a little bit more on your power supply and mother board in case you want to upgrade to a dual video card set up in the future.

For the people saying he needs fast ram...I've only heard of that being important anecdotely. Most bench marks show ram speed having very little effect. Also faster ram tends to have higher latency which would seem to hamper the benifit.
