not saying you shouldn't watch/read part 3, but... overhype crusaders really doesn't live up to its fame, it might have been great at his time, but it has a couple problems, especially just after they meet d'arby, it gets... awkward, and not in the "bizzarre jojo way" but in the "dumb kids gay jokes" way, and in general it is very slow and somewhat bland compared to battle tendency, and diamond is unbreakable(the latter of which has a much much faster pace than the manga in the anime) basically, it influenced so many manga and anime of the new generation, that it ended up creating his own clichès and it didn't age well, kinda like the first metal gear solid(the first mgs if you take out the plot and easter eggs-like things becomes quite disappointing, at least in terms of gameplay, graphics and all these mostly technical things)
it's not bad per se, but you have to get into it with the mind of someone who has only ever seen '90s anime to fully appreciate it.

Good sci-fi? Well, I just flipped through my MAL (which is way out of date) and this is everything that's clearly SF that I rated as a 7+ (in randomish order).

Modernish/cyberpunk:
Time of Eve
Planetes (yes, it's just space garbagemen, it's brilliant)
Texhnolyze
Ghost in the Shell
Serial Experiments Lain
Psycho Pass
Mardock Scamble
<harmony/>
Dennou Coil
Steins;Gate

Far future:
Shinsekai Yori (this one is a bit subtle at first)
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Ergo Proxy
Knights of Sidonia
Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere (may require a lot of context from the prequel novel series for it to make sense, so call this a 50/50 recommendation)
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet

.

The short ones: Mardock Scramble, Time of Eve, Harmony
The "best but they require a good chunk of time investment" ones: Legend of the Galactic Heroes, GitS, Shinsekai Yori (a lot of it doesn't make sense until the second watch)
Emperor Nick of the Cult of Defibrillation
Sith Deity of Thread-Killing

I LOVED the Harmony novel, it's one of my favorite books. The movie definitely had to cut some things to fit into two hours and it can be a touch hard to follow, so I can see the criticism there. They had to yank the caffeine story, which is one of the best bits of worldbuilding in the novel.

As for The Empire of Corpses, I haven't actually seen it yet. Itoh died while he was writing up setting/exposition/etc. so (from what I've heard) the story became a trainwreck because it didn't follow what he had planned at all.

I've seen most of GITS, watched Lain with my mother and saw all of Steins;Gate with both parents. Ty for reminding me to finish Texhnolyze. I've not seen Planetes, whats Shinsekai Yori like?

SSY is...weird. It's easily my favorite anime, though.

It takes place about a thousand years after the discovery of ESP leads to the collapse of modern human civilization. It focuses on how the surviving (esper) villages maintain order and keep their population in line. SSY is as much fantasy as it is sci-fi, but it's so damn good that I have a hard time NOT recommending it. Episode 4 is when the story starts making sense and if you're not curious by then then it's probably not your thing. Oh, and don't drop it when the second arc starts, it seems like a big shift but it's actually not.

@Nick 30075 Yeah not really a huge fan on fantasy cross over stuff, then again, I've watched both SAO and .hack, finished .hack but dropped SAO. How short are we talking about for Mardock Scramble, Time of Eve, Harmony?

12 ep short, Blue Marine No. 6 short? Or like OVA short?
