Official Symthic Forum Rules (Updated 17th Nov 13)

These rules are outdated, please click here for the updated rules.

Hello everybody. For a long time Symthic has operated under a fairly informal and relaxed set of rules, and for a long time it worked; particularly when the community was smaller. However, the Staff team feels that this is no longer the case and that the forum would benefit from a more structured ruleset. As such we have gone and created just that. The new rules are available for viewing below. You should also note that Sao, Blue Panda and Myself now have Ban capabilities so justice will be served faster than before. Please give us feedback on the rules, we are still prepared to alter them if the community have any good suggestions! :D

1. Respect other members and the community at all times.
This means no personal insults or flaming of any kind. As an extension of this rule homophobia, racism and any other forms of discrimination are strictly prohibited.
Users found to be breaking Rule 1 will be issued with an instant warning.

2. Any kind of aggressive, destructive or hateful attitudes will not be tolerated.
In short - don't be a dick. Using insults in lieu of making a point is particularly frowned upon.
Users found to be repeatedly breaking Rule 2 will be issued with a warning. Trolls will be banned upon identification.

3. Don't excessively whine or whinge.
It is OK to complain about things, so long as the complaint is kept rational and calm. Whinging extensively about 'ALL THOSE GODDAM FUCKING M16FIELDA3S KILLING ME ALL THE TIME IT ISN'T FAIR' is not allowed.
Posts found to break Rule 3 may be deleted/locked as relevant.

4. Do not deliberately derail or Necro threads.
We appreciate that conversations drift from the Original Topic occasionally (often for the better), but deliberate derailment (particularly pyramiding) and Necromancy is prohibited. In general a thread over 2-3 months old is considered dead unless a discussion continues after the Necro, in which case it is OK. If in doubt, ask a member of staff!
Users found to be Derailing threads will be issued with an instant warning, and repeated Necros may also incur a warning.

5. Don't create spam or pointless posts or threads.
This rule exists for the simple reason of keeping the forum clean and focused.
Users found to be repeatedly or excessively breaking Rule 5 will be issued with a warning.

6. Illegal materials, Warez, Pornography etc. are prohibited.
Symthic is a mature, clean forum open to users of all ages and we would like to keep it so.
Users found to be breaking Rule 6 will be issued with an instant warning, or in extreme cases a ban.

7. Avoid sensitive issues such as Religion and Politics.
Discussion of these topics has always led to argument and aggression in past and caused major headaches for all involved. If in doubt, don't post.
Users found to be breaking Rule 7 will be issued with an instant warning.

8. If you encounter somebody breaking any rules then please use the report button.
In general it is best if you do not respond to aggressive behaviour to avoid escalating the scenario; if it has been reported a Staff member will deal with it.
Anybody who responds to aggressive behaviour and does not report it will be considered in the wrong as well as the original offender.

9. Do not advertise other websites, Youtube channels etc.
The Staff do occasionally allow established members to promote their content provided they use it to incite discussion, but advertising is otherwise prohibited.
Users found to be repeatedly breaking Rule 9 will be issued with a ban.

10. Multiple Accounts are prohibited.
The exception to this rule is when a user has a legitimate purpose to have a second account; this is quantified by the Staff Team's discretion and should be brought up via PM.
Users found to be breaking Rule 10 will be issued with an instant warning. Any user who is temporarily banned who creates another account will be permanently banned.

Warnings and Bans

Users will be temporarily banned upon the receipt of a third warning and permanently banned if they receive a further 2 warnings after their temporary ban is over. Note that in extreme scenarios this system is flexible and Users may be granted more or less warnings before a ban is the Staff feel it is appropriate. If this is the case it will be openly communicated at the time. Bans can be appealed by sending a Private Message or Email to a staff member; no appeals will be dealt with on the public forum. The length of a temporary ban is not set in stone, but typically lasts between 3 days and a week.

The Staff Team keeps a private record of all warnings.

The Off-Topic Board

The OT Board exists to allow the community to interact and discuss on subjects other than games and stats whilst building personal relationships and friend groups. Users are given a great deal of freedom, but sadly this has been abused in past and damage has been done to friendships and forum threads. As such the Symthic staff would ask that you maintain the same level of maturity in Off Topic as you do in the General and Technical Discussion areas. Aside from that, have fun!
Forum Rules

Hey guys, lets all remember here that this is Symthic, and we are all mature enough to debate a topic without becoming emotional or insulting. Ad Hominim attacks only demonstrate that your position is weak and that you've run out of supporting evidence and serve to undermine your own position. I hope no one here drops to that level.

Sounds great! This should be stickied to the top of every subforum.

Good job making a great rule set guys ;3.
Most of these should be common sense , but having this list will give no excuse anymore for this kind of behavior.

As long as I can say Merica in a post every blue moon in random thread I'm satisfied with naughtiness.

EDIT: Oh I forgot to mention something. Siri hate is still required though </3.

One quick question--is it considering necroing if a thread is still active, but dormant for a time? For example, the anime thread is still used but it'll randomly be inactive for a week or two. Is it considering a necro if we restart a conversation after a few weeks?

Just getting some clarification so we don't lose the thread or anything.

Either way, glad to get this sorted and done.

I'm sure that threads devoted to being the be-all end-all thread for certain topics like that are exempt, i.e. The Random Thread, What Pissed You Off/Made You Howl with Laughter/Made You Smile today, and the Anime Thread.

I agree, a good list of rules.

With regards to rule 4, can you add a time period after a last post which a thread dies? A hard number would remove any ambiguity.

Edit: Should refresh before posting

That is fine, Necroing is only a problem if the discussion &/users are dead. 'Continuous' threads like the Anime thread are kinda immortal TBH.

A good idea. I think the number will be a little flexible because of the nature of individual threads but a guideline number will certainly be useful.

I would consider a thread 'dead' after a week or two of inactivity.

I do feel though, that in 1-2 week cases you could opt to ask a staff member whether if it would be appropriate 'revive' the thread, while if the thread has been inactive for over a month, a new thread should be created. Linking the thread you want to continue wouldn't hurt either.

I don't oppose any of the stated rules TBH, although it is slightly saddening that common sense had to be pointed out.

Thanks for the feedback gents, I've already made a few changes because they are good suggestions. I'll leave the thread here for a bit longer to allow feedback input before I roll it out as a global sticky.

It's as much to do with giving us some structure to moderate more evenly and consistently as it is anything else to be honest. It also clearly sets down what does and doesn't incur a warning, whereas before they were given a little inconsistently.

Good shout about asking staff, I'll add that.

So any hints on who the new mod would be? Or will it be a vote like we did with Athe?
