0.325 is much better for micro-bursting at range than 0.4.

I really like the AWS, MG4, and M249. Note that I run all weapons suppressed.

AWS - To me it feels like an AR with 100 round mags. Accurate, fast deployment, good reload time for an LMG. I like to use this because it allows me to play a bit more aggressive in CQ (my natural play style). I can handle enemies up close, at mid range, and at long-ish range with rap fiting.

MG4 - It's a monster. Great suppression, great damage, 200 round mags. Reload time takes a while as it is belt fed. This one def requires tap firing for anything not in close range, unless you are solid with recoil management (not crazy kicks, just kicks).

M249 - Pretty much the same as the MG4, with with the right grip and a laser sight it's good for hip firing too (well, for an LMG). Pretty similar to the MG4 in most regards except the MG4 has vertical spread, M249 has horizontal.

I was new to the BF series starting in December, but the M249 was the first LMG I ever fell in love with (in any FPS). From there I moved to the MG4 and now I'm really enjoying the AWS. I've also heard the Type 88 is a tapfire laser. There are a lot of good options, but I'd suggest trying them out and seeing what works best for you.

at range, 0.075 penalty of somewhat manageable V recoil < 0.15 penalty of unpredictable H recoil ... maybe :)

It's 0.1125 difference with the compensator.

Depends really. There's an LMG for everybody but you've gotta think about what you want out of a gun and how you like to play in BF4.

...I should make a flowchart for this sort of thing :P

But compensator is a big no-no because then you don't get HB. HB is amazing and very needed whenever you're shooting to > 30-40 m.

Maybe I'm gonna be "that guy", and not be particularly helpful, and please consider your source, for I say this as someone who dearly, dearly loves flopping down with an MG and letting it rip, but if you're playing a lot of Metro and Domination, maybe an LMG isn't for you. A shotgun or a carbine may be more the thing for your situation. If you're dead set on using a machine gun, though, I'm going to echo basically everyone in this thread and say AWS if you're a belieber and MG4 if you're a real man. Heavy barrel, ergo grip, reflex sight, and why not the laser/light combo? There's not much room for a sneaky machine gunner on Metro (so you needn't worry about the light giving you away), and you don't need the visual range afforded by the magnifier. I'd suggest the XM25 for those tightly-packed corners, too.
