I do not know what to think about stuff like so-called competitive gamemodes. Simply for the fact that they are still based around an understanding of the franchise that has has little in common with the way I see Battlefield. I mean I despise 64 players mostly but games with only ten people? Where is the battlefield here? I acknowledge the fact that they are now trying to bring objective based modes into the competitive scene as well as core features like vehicles, but I think the competitive scene should adapt to the game not the other way around.

On the mode itself I also fear that the tank might be too much of a gamechanger, even if an MBT is not the optimal choice when going against infantry only. I recall the SqDM disaster of BF3 and BC2. Whoever came up with an idea like that deserves to be punished. :D I also think that flag assets as potent as this are a bad choice balance wise. I think so in BF4 in general and especially with lower player counts.

On another topic though: With the new weapons coming out in a week or so, do we know if we have to unlock them or do we have them at the read right off the start? If not, do we yet know the requirements for unlocks?

They're doing that because it's much easier to gather small team and they're planning to add [casual] competitive matchmaking. How many clans would be able to get 32 players now for a single match? And they want the matchmaking to be populated so you can just quickly gather your team and play against other people. And I think they agree that there is not much Battlefield there in modes like Domination/Defuse and even Squad Obliteration which is why they're trying hard to create a small 5v5 Conquest that would still feel like Battlefield.

Not saying I agree with them. I'd rather have them focus on something else.

Yeah point taken. Still it should be possible for clans to gather enough people for a 24 slot server. 24 players on most maps (with a little tuning) would ensure a battlefieldesque experience and a lopsided game through spawned assets would not arise as much.

even 20 would be enough(saying this by being a console player for most of my gaming life) yet they still stick with 5v5, as if it is the ony acceptable number.

the only counter-argument i can think they might have is "controlling a squad of more than 5 people is too hard" but then, wouldn't be able to actually control it be a skill in ittself? real militaries control squads of up to double-digit numbers of people, while controlling a great number of squads at the same time, i can't see how in battlefield we can't have the same.

A big reason is because players individual matter more the smaller numbers get. In 5v5 I feel like that individual performance had to great an impact on 5v5 for casual comp. A really great player or experienced 5s player could single handily turn the tide of a 5v5 with a terrible team. This isn't has much the case once you get to 8v8/10v10 with vehicles. Individual performance matters but not nearly has much. I mean there will be always be clutch moments in both player sizes but its not like a guys going 30-1 in a 10v10 is an insta win. It is a huge help for their team but not an insta win.

The other issue with player count like vincentNZ said. Damn near no one can feild 32 players. Comms are difficult but doable, we have had 32v32 before. Part of my responsibilities on team symthic is trying to find teams to play. Damn near no one can gather 32 people who are interested. Even in 8s and 10s its very common for teams to have to re-scheduled stuff because they don't have all the players they need. Then you add on top of it that you need vehicle specialist it makes it even harder to gather numbers because it isn't like you can just grab 10 infy guys. You need to be able to make sure your scout pilot can play, your jet pilot can play, your two tank drives then 6 infy is normally easy to find. All the time we have to be like well we can't play this map because our scout guy isn't here or we don't have a boat driver today so lets play this map. We have these difficulties and Team Symthic has easily the largest roster of any comp team in BF4. We are easily 3x larger then most teams.

They are doing 5v5 first because it is the easiest. The mode itself could be scaled up to 8v8 and 10v10 easily and likely will be if 5v5 works out well.

TLDR -
Teamwork is where players function by themselves, but their effectiveness is multiplied when they work together. Not a checklist of "did we bring a healer so we can start playing?"

On another topic though: With the new weapons coming out in a week or so, do we know if we have to unlock them or do we have them at the read right off the start? If not, do we yet know the requirements for unlocks?

Unless plans have changed (which is unlikely), they're simply being patched into the game, no strings attached. Download patch, have new guns.

Even better is that we have four primaries and a sidearm, so you can just equip and use all of them right off the bat.

Awww :(

Having to unlock things is (usually) fun (see Hardline Syndicate assignments for examples of bullshit).

I don't want to be handed something on a silver platter.

I tend to agree; a small, simple assignment for each would have been nice. It prevents having to decide which new stuff to use first. :D

Hopefully we get some new assignments with the night maps in the summer patch, even if just for tags or paints.

If we don't I'm gonna complain. There's only so much replay-ability left in this game
