Improving BF4's positional audio with PROFSAVE_profile

I wanted to start a discussion for BF4's audio settings. We learned in BF3 that some settings could be changed that weren't in the game settings.

GstAudio.AudioQuality 0 - We learned in BF3's files that the two options for this was 1 (default) and 0 (high) but hearing any differences was purely subjective.

GstAudio.SoundSystemSize 20 - We learned in BF3 that this setting can only be used in multiples of 5. The general internet assumption was to use 20 51 and 71 (being 2.0 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound modes) being that it's meant to be multiples of 5 my assumption is that 80 would = 7.1 as it's a 8 speaker setup.

I really want to avoid getting into a discussion about what sound cards or speakers or headphones to use. But my advice is to make sure the following settings are enabled

Windows set to 7.1 (full range speakers)
Enable CMSS-3D (crative) Headphone Virtualization (realtek) or Dolby DH-1 (Asus)
Make sure GstAudio.StereoMode 0
Set your bitrate to 48KHz / 24bit to avoid any up or down sampling

EDIT: There is so much terrible and misleading information in this thread. Please read this: The Nameless Guide To PC Gaming Audio (with binaural headphone surround sound) to learn more.

You can't enable Headphone Virtualization with 7.1, it has to be stereo

So you're saying to use virtual surround sound, some may feel that it's "better".

Hardware is what makes proper sound staging, attempting to replicate it with software virtualization is just terrible.

well,i did found some problem with the audio directions(like ,things behind me ar un-hearable,at left ight they brake my ears, and at front it's normal, but it's not like i have good headset, just some shitty afterglow agu 1.s) so yeah,i was wondering if i could find a way to still give it that "5.1" feeling and still being able to hear things behind me.

You have to use the magic "virtual surround" thing.

It's currently outputting at a physical 8.1, thus rear sounds are muted, because rear speakers do not exist.

It's a hit or miss with sound virtualization. Just try stereo.

Yes, you can, yes it's better and no you don't need hardware (in the multiple speakers around the room sense.)
Do a search for binaural 3d audio. It's the same technology Dolby headphone and CMSS-3D use. You have to give it a 7.1 source then it adjusts the timing, spacing and volume of the sounds to mimic how the brain/ear position sounds. Hard ware is very important because not all headphones were created equally. But saying you should use stereo mode you are sorely mistaken. You only have two ears, you don't need 10 speakers to emulate 3D positioning. So lets refrain from the "use stereo" comments as this isn't what the thread is about. The point of this thread was to discuss the strings in the file and what they do and also not what your personal opinion about hardware is.

If you want to learn more about good headphones and positioning read: Mad Lust Envy's Headphone Gaming Guide: (Updated 9/2/2013: Sony MA900 added)

Hey thanks for this, this was a quesiton on my mind too

What's the difference between DH-1 (Asus) and DH-2 but increase the volume?

GstAudio.SoundSystemSize 20, not 71? Please no assumptions! :D

Stereo (2 outputs) itself can produce sound stage, assuming it's well placed and you know how to place them

Funny how you mentioned about speaker quantity , I could close my eyes in a room and throw something around to make noise, that's positional audio through multiple sound sources.
