Defensive is overrated and overused. Combat Medic, Grenadier, Anti Tank, Mechanic and Shadow are much more useful.

I love all these people whining about Defensive automatically turning the tide of battle in infantry fights.

Well, so do tanks.

If only people played more than TDM/DOM with an engagement distance of at least 50m instead of 1m.

That isn't really a fitting comparison. There's only a limited number of tanks on the field whereas defensive can be chosen at will.

I disagree.

While Defensive is available to everyone, it is certainly not an end all be all perk that people MUST run in order to win.

Sure in meatgrinder infantry only TDM/DOM maps/modes it's a strong choice, but as has been pointed out before, vehicles really put into question its effectiveness.

Battlefield shouldn't be balanced around infantry engagemenets that happen within 10m. This is approximately all CTE discussion is about though.

They're free to do that if they wish, but the game is balanced around Conquest, as well as modes like Rush, Obliteration, and CTF, not that. Complaining Defensive/Assault/ARs/etc are "overpowered" in mid-close range, infantry-only, (nearly) objectiveless gamemodes is rather like complaining about Engy in something like Tank Superiority.

That's a counter vs what-it-counters, but yes, similar mentality.

Because people can't seem to wrap their head around the fact that rock beating scissors is how the game works and not an imbalance.

Don't disagree, I was merely stating this as fact. Many, many people's opinions on the game are informed about the narrow aspect of it they focus on.
