I've not been keeping up with the BF4 info very well but I believe we already knew both of these things, it is still good to have them confirmed, even though they were in the alpha files.

MAA aavactiveradarrockets is referred to as "active radar" while aavmissiles is referred to as "passive radar" (MAA is going to have a crap load of missile/rocket choices)

Indeed! missiles and primary weapon choices aplenty for the MAA

I'm mostly interested in what the Heavy shell, the airburst missiles and the ones labelled as simple - missiles could be/do. Ideas?

Would "AavActiveRadarRockets" be surface-to-surface missiles (BF3's guided missiles) and "AavMissiles" the wire-guided?

Yes and no. With the smoke we knew their were two but there were some doubts as to whether the other smoke was a stub placeholder since there was no data on it as to specific TTL's and reload times.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time we've heard the "aavmissiles" referred to as "passive radar xxx."

Guessing heavy shell is going to be a variant on the "main weapon caliber choice" theme. Something like faster speed, easier to hit main cannon with low damage whereas the heavy shell has slower ROF but higher damage....maybe lower ammo count and higher dmg vs vehicle too....

Airburst missiles? my guess? This http://battlefield.wikia.com/wiki/Air-Burst_Missile

I think they're trying to sneak some of the mobile artillery specs onto the MAA
Passive radar missle? Hmmmm I know passive radar is usually IR related stuff but......there's already heatseekers so....dude, got me.

I think active radar will still be A to A but require to hold your lock as opposed to fire and forget. AAVmissiles were described as "passive radar" by Corey so I doubt it's wire guided. That would give it AT capability and I think they want it to stick to AA plus a little bit of artillery capability.

"Passive radar" usually means that the missile doesn't have it's own radar transmitter, so the AA will have to keep lock on to guide the missile until it hits. "Active radar" probably has it's own transmitter so it will be fire-and-forget.

"Airburst" could be that the missiles detonate when they get close to the plane, without having to hit directly, as a tool against missile-dodging ace pilots. (This is also how AA misssiles work IRL, directs hits are both hard and overkill)

Passive radar refers generally to IR missiles

You're right on the active radar though. However my suspicion is that the active radar is actually meant to be Semi Active which requires a constant lock.

No, that is passive "homing". IR missiles use IR guidance (heat-seeking), not radar.

Though really, "passive radar" should be a missile that homes in on the target's own radar transmitter. So it would only work if the target had the air radar perk selected. I can't see DICE adding a weapon like that so "passive radar" is probably semi-active radar homing.

IRL I don't believe there are any passive radar homing AA missiles, such missiles are only used to attack ground based radar stations.
