Implications of next gen console tech on BF4?

Right then. We're getting to the point where quite a bit of info is being leaked about the tech specs for the upcoming next gen XBox and PS4 which are looking like being released this year.

There's an interesting summary of the leaked info so far here.

Do we think that there will be a version of BF4 released for the new consoles to take advantage of (if nothing else) the considerably higher available system/graphics memory? I appreciate that it would be a poor business decision for EA to ignore the current technology, but do you think it would be feasible to have map size, player count and vehicle rosters from the PC version on the next gen consoles while retaining a scaled down version for the current tech. There is another rumour round up of the PS4 here, which suggests that the PS4 might actually have 8GB shares as is predicted for the next XBox. Either way, 4/8GB is certainly a huge step up from the 512MB available in the current consoles.

What are your thoughts, or is it too early to tell? Some sources are suggesting an announcement of PS4 in May this year, or perhaps a pre E3 (June) announcement for both consoles, so the timescales are such as to hopefully have the tech in gamers homes by the time BF4 is released.

In other words, this game's code looks like it's written by 5 year old kiddo compared to how DICE did things with BF3.

8 GB of RAM.... That'd mean good times for PC gamers because then we'd finally get 64-bit games.

Any earlier than late 2014 makes absolutely no sense. The Ps3/XBOX360 were both announced 2 years before they were released, I think the PS2 and Xbox were the same. From E3 2013 to Christmas 2013 is no where near enough time to hype up a release like this.

The first Playstation lasted 6 years, and so did the second one. PS3 has been out for a little over 6 years now.

And the 360 was released just 4 years after the first one, and the 360 has been out for over 7 years now.

They don't need to "hype" the releases of consoles, really. At least not anymore. And if anything, announcing the new consoles 2 years before they come out would just hurt their current sales.

But if they do actually come out in late 2014 (and have those rumored specs) they are going to be so outdated...

Yeah, I think with technology like consoles it's not realistic to make assumptions about the future based on the past console generations. It seems that every piece of tech equipment has a shorter and shorter lifespan these days. I wouldn't be surprised if the next gen consoles would be around only half the time compared to current one before the next one in announced. If the next gen consoles are released in 2014, think about the gap between PC gamin and those consoles in year 2020...

So? Like Santewi said, you HARDLY have to hype up the release of the next-gen consoles... And plus, they're hyped up enough already!

I'd hardly be surprised if they skimp on it and put fermi or other 40+mm hardware in them...

I'd have to agree. Maybe sooner then "late" 2014, but I too doubt there would be that quick of a turn around between an official reveal of a new system and its release.

IRTT, I suspect most of the improvements will come on the console side of things. One thing that DICE did right was not lower the bar on everything, so PC's got to strut their stuff a bit more.

The single biggest problem games have with "developed for a console, ported to a PC" is the control scheme. Unless Microsoft or Sony go hog wild and go keyboard and mouse which is very unlikely, games will still more often then not fail to reach their full potential.
