Game types you would like to see in Battlefield 3

Actually thought about making this topic yesterday, but didn't for some reason... But since we already got into that topic in the maps thread I might just as well make it...

So at the moment we have Domination, Assault and Team deathmatch, plus spinoffs with reduced numbers as squad rush and squad deathmatch

New game modes which might be fun:

King of the hill - Perhaps a spinoff what Sao suggested in the maps thread. Reinforcements spawn in waves. Like capture the hill and you can spawn up top, enemy below. If they capture the "hill" they spawn up top and you spawn below. Whoever hold the hill the longest wins :>

Escort - Some VIP drives/walks through the map, you have to protect it against counter attacks. Kind of like rush except that it's the AI VIP that attacks. Can also be something like a bomber / boat /whatever that has to reach the destination. Each point you reach all spawns are moved up one step.

Capture the Flag usually doesn't work well in these war games.. Belongs to games like quake and unreal tournament.. But maybe something similar.. Maybe a snatch and grab mission. Grab some secret documents/item or even AI person and guide them back to base.

Headquarters (yes, like CoD). I believe this could be awesome for BF3. Much much bigger maps plus destructible environment... If you haven't played it before: The game sets up a random target for a headquarter which you have to capture. Once you do you can't respawn, but the enemy still can until it's destroyed or time runs out. Whoever holds it the longest wins. Just imagine setting up a headquarter somewhere in Karkand and defend it. Spawn points might be tricky to fix since they were random in CoD, and maps are way bigger. But could be awesome.

War (yes, CoD again) - It's basically rush, but the enemy can recapture the old line of defense and turn back the attack. Basically it's rush from both teams. The more you push them back the faster your tickets deplete.

Spec ops/Search and Destroy - Perhaps not really a new game mode but rather a new way of spawning.. But basically you spawn high up in an aircraft in waves, parachuting down to take out an objective. Perhaps blowing up a radar station or something could be the objective. Perhaps a spinoff on rush, but just one objective per game. Could also work just like rush, that a new objective unlocks after each... Just not sure what happens with the people left at the old one... Perhaps a bit like CoD's search and destroy, but rather than game over after the first death you spawn in waves. Once all are dead or a certain amount of time has passed the whole team respawns. Should result in even more tactical gameplay.

Umm yeah... that's all, for now ;o

HQ and War would defenitely work perfect in Battlefield and i have no ideo why they did not implement it.
Search and destroy could be cool but since BF is not as "fair" as CoD (motion sensors etc.) it would probably become a VERY slow and unpopular gamemode like squad rush.
I like the other ideas too although they might be hard to program...

I've always wondered why BF has only 2 and a half game types. War gametype sounds fun.
How the hell did I get a sniper as my top weapon?

Hmm.. What do you mean by that? Comparing it to Unreal Tournament 99 the only difference I can think of is that the spawns favor those close to the rest of your team. Plus the difference in map layout of course... Most are just flat with 1-2 levels up...

To be blunt you have not played much TDM then. Perhaps you are mixing it up with instagib TDM in ut99.

TDM is the original team game mode and has objectives just like conquest, rush or ctf. However because these objectives are not marked on a map or involve a flag many people do (did) not understand how TDM works.

The objective in TDM is to get items and deny the enemy team. It is resource management before flat out killing. This is especially important when teams are even.

Using one item as an example, the quad. When quad is spawning soon on dm6 (because your team is timing it using the in game clock) your team trys to move into position around the central atrium. They try to get the drop on it, deny the enemy the pickup and also try to keep your quad guy alive once he picks it up so you can reap the benefits of the pickup. They probably leave health packs, or even guard health packs while he goes on his quad run so he can easily replenish if needed.

Quad is usually every 1-3 minutes - depending on game and depending on map. Games I am thinking of mostly here are quakes and unreals. Every few minutes your team needs to come together and attack that point.

This is carried to lower importance items. Red armour or shieldbelts are important and either keeping track of them by timing them or controlling the area they sapwn. In the shieldbelts case this is viable to time since it is 55 seconds, red armour in quakes is roughtly half this so more difficult to keep track of.

A game would flow along the lines of armour/mega+weapons -> Quad -> armour/mega+weapons -> Quad and so on.

On top of this you have players spawning with default guns and most competitive games were played with weaponstay off. This means that your team has to share weapons with each other, or players don't have firepower required. Weapons become important, as does ammo for some weapons in some games. For example ut99 spawned multiple ammo packs next to every weapon spawn so you got close to full ammo count when you picked up a gun. Whereas in q3 a good rail player will need to go and track down ammo, esp if their team is not in control of the rail area.

A death is not just a point to the other team, it is a loss of the resources that player had. Perhaps they died shortly after picking up red armour but your team has mega+yellow? You now have an advantage and should push it for the next 20-30 seconds before they get to armour up again.

It is more subtle than "get the flag" which is why it is probably not understood.

Just a note: ctf in quake/unreal played out in a similar fashion, with items dictating captures instead of kill runs. Six to one in my opinion.

How to implement this in BF3? I am not sure. I have thought about it but might save that for another post.

nps :P

I am not sure I would advocate a quad for bf3 tdm, was just outlining what the concept was.
