Soldiers' speed

Hi all,

I was just wondering if soldiers' speed (walking and running) is different in function of the class used. I remember an Engineer or Support class was running slower in BF2 because he was equipped with heavy weapons. However in BF3, I do not feel that Engineer/Support run slower than Assault/Recon. Am I true?

Re: Soldiers' speed

Everyone runs at the same speed, the only difference is when you use the speed perk as well as what weapon you have when aiming down its sights, but standard running and sprinting is the same.

Guess they wanted to make things as equal as possible for everyone this time so you can play any way you want, probably why all weapons are pretty much the same...

I don't really agree with this. Some of the weapons are very similar but others are outrageously different (and hilariously overpowered as a result -- see AN-94).

Re: Soldiers' speed

The other day I was playing with a friend in my squad with the squad sprint perk on, and I was running noticeably faster. One of us was assault and the other engineer (can't remember who was who) and we couldn't figure it out. Ideas? Maybe a glitch

Re: Soldiers' speed

Some (all?) Squad perks seem to only apply depending on who respawns first. Like your ammo isn't doubled if the ammo perk guy spawns after you, but he gets double grenades from your grenade perk since you were already alive and active

Guessing that you had the sprint perk and he respawned before you

Kinda lame, but it's hard to apply bonus "in the middle" of a game since it might replenish soldiers out of ammo etc... Though I doubt anyone would really complain about it...

Re: Soldiers' speed

Class sprinting speeds are all different.

Here is the logical speed list in descending order:
Recon > Assault > Engineer > Support

Sprinting and jumping is also much faster than sprinting (~20%, I'd say).

In conclusion: If you must win the race then go Recon with the Sprint perk and jump your way to the finish line. Also, a sprinting/jumping Support without the Sprint perk can out race everyone not jumping. I often win the race in Metro as Support, even when not starting in first position, provided there are no traffic jams.

I never tested the walking speed but it may also vary.

Re: Soldiers' speed

More detailed post below!
Soldiers' speed <- Link

Fine then, I'll do the tests...

Karkand A-B flag (the hedgehog in front of A running straight into the side of B building)
95-15(sidestepped to measure more accurate against the flag)= ~80 meter distance

Assault: F2000
Engineer: P90
Support: MG36
Recon: M98B

Measured in seconds

No perk normal
Assault - 20.07
Engineer - 20.13
Support - 20.04
Recon - 20.00

No perk sprint
Assault - 12.46
Engineer - 12.39
Support - 12.40
Recon - 12.47

Sprint perk normal
Assault - 20.07
Engineer - 20.02
Support - 20.03
Recon - 20.10

Sprint perk sprint
Assault - 11.23
Engineer - 11.28
Support - 11.33
Recon - 11.29

Standard running = 4 m/s = 14.4 km/h
Standard sprinting = 6.45 m/s = 23, 2 km/h
Perk sprinting = 7.01 m/s = 25,5 km/h

They say that average running speed is ~22-25 km/h... These heavy weight soldiers are damn fast... ;>

So... Conclusions:
Running speeds are exactly identical regardless of class and weapon carried.
Sprint perk is pretty poor... Only 1 second saved on 80 meters, that's almost nothing...

If you count that the default street in BF3 is 10 meters and a double lane street 20...

10 meters:
Normal: 2.5 seconds
Sprint: 1.55 seconds
Perk: 1.42 seconds

You save 0.95 seconds by sprinting instead of running normally, a good incentive to sprint across open spaces. But the sprint perk only reduces your exposure by another 0.13 seconds, that's the blink of an eye.

Double street (like karkand for example) you save 1.9 seconds by sprinting, but only 0.26 with the sprint perk.

I don't really see much point in choosing the sprint perk in comparison to ammo, explosives, grenades, suppression/counter suppression.. Maybe tied with flak.. But the 4 squad is already full with perks...

In regards to running + jumping... Well, apart from being extremely stupid, it actually does increase speed... I'd label it as a bug.

Running: 18.79 = 4,26 m/s = 15,3 km/h
Sprint (no perk): 11.69 = 6,84 m/s = 24,6 km/h
Sprint (perk): 10.64 = 7,52 m/s = 27,1 km/h

Another second off the time.. Or ~6% faster than normal

But seriously, that sort of thing belongs in games like CoD, just like the prone glitching. For the sake of the game and community, don't do it...

Re: Soldiers' speed

Hmmm. Given this data, I'll have to try out something other than sprint. GRENADE ALL THE THINGS!!!

I still think Sprint is necessary in conquest, given how much time it takes to get anywhere if you can't get your hands on a vehicle.

Re: Soldiers' speed

You'd save about 12 seconds when running between the main bases in caspian / firestorm : / Just a tad longer than reloading the M60

Re: Soldiers' speed

I think the running speed is too high for a soldier carrying his weapon, ammo and radio/ meds/ rpg/ supplies. Wish they tone it down to around 18km/h or lower. Its ridiculous to see a fully equiped soldier zipping across the road like a top athlete.
