Spotting - Buggy? Does it Overheat? Does it have a max range?

So we were chatting about this in the chat, and we've looked through the other threads here, and we couldn't find one that was relevant.

So it really seems like spotting overheats, and needs a cool down period. There used to be a audible "click" sound for spotting (at least on PC) but that is gone now. Sometimes I have a hell of a time spotting jets, and just today I had one that swooped past me really low, and I tried spotting it about 10 times in 5 seconds, and even though my crosshair was on it I could not get it to register!

I would chalk that up to "buggy 3d spotting" but I had clear line of sight on this jet, nothing could have possibly obstructed my view, and the jet was really close to me! Anyways, this thread is for discussing what is known about spotting.

When it starts to make that clicking sound it is "overheated"

Like in the beta where it would make the beeping sound 8|

I've never noticed a clicking sound... xD
But it does seem to get overheated. Just now I tried to spot a group of 5-6 enemies, after spotting the first 2 or 3 I was unable to spot the rest...
Maybe this is a 'nerf' on spotting because DICE thought it would otherwise be OP? But I think it just encourages spotting even less =/

Well, on PC that clicking sound has been gone since the March patch. Are you certain this sound was for "overheating" ? Because I can recall still getting it to work even while hearing the clicking sound.

Actual commanders in BF2 abused this to a proper benefit.

But since most would whine of "Enemy infantry spotted!" x9999999 continuously (because they overlook the fact that it's a free UAV) they added spot cooldown.
/Conspiracy.

Why does spotting have a cooldown anyway? Is it a per spot timer (I don't know, I can make 2 quick spots of different things) but then after that, I can't spot anything for X amount of time. (After X amounts which would function like a weapon overheat or something)

I've always assumed being unable to spot a vehicle is due to the "stealth" perk being used by the driver/pilot? Almost like I need to spot them for longer in order to complete the spot.
Men running around, I don't understand either why sometimes I can spot someone, others, nothing at all. If it's the cooldown period as you say, I'm pleased to hear there is a reason.

Stealth AFAIK only decreases spot time, not the spot ability itself.
