DICE is not to blame, nor is EA, for the struggles of BF3

Have you ever considered that the current BF3 playerbase is solely to blame for the current state of BF3? DICE gave us server customization, yet no one utilized it. Consider the four following scenarios:

Server #1: What BF3 could be
  • No health regeneration
  • HUD
  • Normal damage
  • No Killcam
  • Minimap spotting
  • Friendly fire on
  • No 3d spotting
  • Squad leader spawn only
  • Normal respawn times for infantry and vehicles

Server #2: What BF3 currently looks like, normal
  • Health regeneration
  • HUD
  • Normal damage
  • Killcam
  • Minimap spotting
  • Friendly fire off
  • 3d spotting
  • All squad spawn
  • Instant respawn

Server #3: What BF3 currently looks like, hardcore
  • No health regeneration
  • No HUD
  • Scaled damage
  • No killcam
  • No minimap spotting
  • No spotting altogether
  • Friendly fire on
  • No 3d spotting
  • Squad leader spawn only
  • Instant respawn

Server #4: What Battlefield 1942-BC1 look like
  • No health regeneration
  • No ammo pool (bc1 exception)
  • Stamina bar
  • HUD
  • Normal damage
  • No killcam
  • Minimap spotting
  • No sound spotting
  • Friendly fire on
  • No 3d spotting
  • Squad leader spawn only
  • Normal respawn times for infantry and vehicles

We can easily create an experience that mirrors the older Battlefield games, with a few exceptions such as the ammo pool and stamina bar. Despite this, there is not a single populated server with these settings. Because of this, I believe the BF3 community is to blame for the struggles of this game. DICE has given us almost everything we need, with the exception of voip and mod tools, to make this game play like past Battlefield games. We can improve this game by changing a few server settings, yet nobody does it.

Yes, DICEA lied about charging for dlc and insulted the community by telling them modding bf3 would be too complicated. DICE made the gunplay more reflex based than teamwork based, as well as oversimplify the classes and maps, but that alone did not make BF3 what it is today.

I didnt play bc1 and i only played bf2 a small amount but i dont see how the classes are simplified. i remember bf2 having a lot more classes such as spec ops etc
Personally, i don't take a stance on whether or not there is a creating entity because i'm humble enough to realize, in my fucking insignificance, the concept escapes my comprehension with a lead of 9001 light years.

I like server #2, wouldn't bother with 1, 3 or 4.

Nostalgia; the ideology that everything was better in times past.

Zoidberg is afflicted with this.

This is what DICE said about free DLC.

Quoted from "DICE"

"We don't ever want to charge for our maps and insisted to EA that this attitude was crucial when it came to keeping our community happy and playing together,"

"...insisted EA that this attitude was crucial"
"...insisted EA that this attitude was crucial"
"...insisted EA that this attitude was crucial"
"...insisted EA that this attitude was crucial"

Is this clear enough yet?

They never said BF3 or Battlefield DLC will be free.
EA has the final word on this.

Server settings wont fix unbalanced classes, unbalanced weapons and attachments, the unbalanced perks for vehicles, the countless bugs and glitches, the bad map designs and many other things.

"...insisted EA that this attitude was crucial" .

If you are going to quote like that, you may want to make sure it is accurate before you repeat it ten times or whatever.

"...insisted TO EA that this attitude was crucial"

It is all a very nice forum argument, but it comes down to 1 question. Where does the money come from? Mappers, QA, coders... all have salaries. Extra sales generated in the long term likely don't cover those salaries (Can't be sure, don't have the numbers). But I think you can look to TF2 and RO2 if you don't believe me.

For a long time PC gamers have been claiming that TF2 shows long term patching is possible and pays for itself. Well Valve has made the game free to play and it actually pays for itself now. Compare the amount of support L4D2 and Portal 2 have gotten next to TF2 and you will see just how big a difference monetization has made. Valve still ads stuff for free true, but it is clear that the staff is being paid by other things.

RO2 is another great example. People keep claiming MOD tools make all the difference... RO2 has mod tools and they are still making their first expansion a paid for expansion. The developers added a single map since the game launched and it is still missing content promised on release. It took them almost 8 months to get that patch out, which has been recognized by the community as finally making the game playable.

I suppose you could hold up Minecraft or some other indie with free content to me, but the fact is... you need a way to pay for it. So how will you pay for it?

I agree with the OP. You couldn't sell 1942 to today's gamers. They would get bored in a few days with so few unlocks and a lack of customization of weapons. The community and standards for FPS games has changed. That doesn't mean I wouldn't rather play on a Custom settings server, but I am realistic enough to know that the way things work right now I would be playing alone most the time.

I would actually love for DICE to take a poll of the community before BF4 and figure out what presets they would like (best to do it in a survey and not a forum). Set hardcore, normal, and maybe a "classic" from there AND be willing to adjust those from there if the community reacts strongly against a certain rule.

1st: Not everyone has the money to rent a server.

2nd: If we did have a server, and used those settings it would automatically change to an unranked server. This will give absolutely no points, no hud notifications that we killed someone, ect. Itd make for an even worse experience.

3rd: The players dont directly control the balance of the game, DICE does. If players controlled the balance the game would be even worse, because not everyone is symthic.

HOWEVER, I do understand the point you are trying to make. Though, its not really a viable one it still is a point.

I'm not trying to be a dick and say you're argument is stupid, cause its not. It just has holes.

I could swear everything Zoidberg posts usually includes something along the lines of,"It was better in ____."
