Rank 10 variants aren't even "pay-walled", I don't know how you came to that conclusion. They are an addition in the CTE and will be included in the next base-game update. I bet they were supposed to be added before the game launched, but didn't make it in for one reason or another, with different unlock criteria but now that it's 5 months into the release DICE settled for a "grind-wall" so that they were still a challenge to unlock. What would be the point if the variants were easier to get than the originals? A variant is still a different enough weapon that it requires some effort to attain and absolutely should have a similar challenge associated with them just as it was a challenge to reach rank 10 with each class.
To Aim Assist or not to Aim Assist, that is the question.

And since you're using another variant of the gun you're trying to unlock, it's not like you're being forced to use a weapon you don't like to get the gun you want. I don't see any significant differences that would make anyone want the new unlocks if they don't like the level 10 variants.

That being said, I can't wait to get my hands on the new Hellriegel. With two bipoded Assault guns now I might never use Support again lol.

Just remember that unlike MGs and the Ribeyrolle the Hellriegel fires a pistol cartridge so the bipod probably won't be THAT useful.
