M97 Hunter: What am I missing?

Hello! I have been a lurker since BF4 and have registered here recently because I find the conversations and engagements among fellow players more refreshing than the constant whining and cries for nerfs and such that I see on the BF4 or BF1 Reddit. Really like that about this place :)

On to my question as I am curious to see what I'm doing wrong with this gun. The M97, I do like it and it seems to suit me just fine since my aim can be erratic at times to say the least. However I have had issues with this weapon beyond 10 meters. I begin using the gun after seeing a video from Marbleduck suggesting it and the 12g. Now I went out and used the 12g and I have had some success with it, enough that I intend to use it more after I try out the Sjorgren some more. I am having issues with the M97 though. As mentioned earlier beyond 10m it has a tendency for me to be inconsistent. The Sweeper variant is fine on maps like Argonne or even on Scar inside of the town between D and E flags inside of buildings. Usually though If I want more consistency I run the backbore and basically spam it. Relying completely on the reduced recoil and rate of fire to carry me beyond the 10m threshold.

I have lately though decided to try and use the Hunter version. I have however noticed according to the stat page on this site that the pellet spread is no tighter than the backbored which left me kind of stunned as I expected the Hunter to have a tighter pellet cone spread. After a little more research on the weapon info page I did notice an extra 2 meter dropoff advantage over the backbore. I guess what I'm getting at is rather simple. Is the extra 2 meters of range really that much of a difference considering the rate of fire of the M97 to begin with? In my experience using the backbore is that I can usually make a quick followup shot and problem solved. For me at least it would seem the reduction in recoil has more of a benefit than the 2 meters of extra range. I'm curious is there something I'm missing about the Hunter Variant of this gun?

Also sorry ahead of time for any spelling or grammatical errors. Neither is really a strength of mine

Perhaps it is the case that the hunter is more compelling on PC where recoil control is easier, but the backbore is superior with a controller. 2/3 the recoil seems like a good trade off for 2 meters less ohk. Maybe at 138 rpm the difference in recoil is not so big on PC but is on console. Is the issue that you lose track of the target due to recoil with the hunter or it just makes landing the 2nd shot harder? Maybe both?

Hmm I didn't consider the differences from PC to Console. I can say from my own use of the Hunter variant the recoil hasn't alarmed me that much that it causes me issues. To tell you the truth I usually pace myself with the M97 regardless of the variant. Just because I can fire that fast doesn't mean I should I suppose it what my line of thinking is. Come to think of it the ease of landing a 2nd shot with the backbore may be the reason I'm having better usage out of the backbore over the Hunter. As in I pace myself with the hunter knowing I have added recoil, but with the backbore I'm more willing to chance quicker followup shots because of less recoil at the expense of slightly worse dropoff range.

It's still an interesting concept with the shotguns on both PC and console. I kind of now wonder about the utility of the hunter variant on console. Heck I could turn around and just run the Model 10 hunter if I want the extra range. Than of course you run up on the low rate of fire of the Model 10 rearing its ugly head. I still wonder though if the PC users would prefer the less recoil option over the extra range of the hunter variant. The extra 2 meters or so across both platforms just seems insignificant.

First off, welcome to Symthic! It's always nice to see that the manner of which this forum is conducted gets noticed and appreciated by outsiders. Glad to have you aboard for the time being.

About the Hunter variants, they do in fact have tighter pellet cones through using a Choke which gives them that extra range. It's a little deceiving. While the spread values are equal across all M97 variants I think the pellets stick close to the center of the spread cone rather than dispersing equally throughout the cone, if that makes sense. That's just my thought, I'd be interested to see how it works as well if I'm incorrect.

Hint: It's very possible that I am. :/

What are you missing? The target.

Shotguns require you to have your aimpoint well centered on the enemy for a OHK past spitting distance. The M97 is great for this because even if you don't get the OHK you can fire another round pretty fast. The Sjögren is similar in this regard and 12G is strictly a 2 shot kill or more.

It takes time to kinda "know" when you'll need to shoot more than one round and when not to, but you shouldn't expect OHKs if you're not perfectly on target.

I find quite a bit of success with the Sweeper actually. 22 pellets at 7.2 damage per pellet out to 15m is pretty generous. The pellet dispersion is pretty wide at 2.25° (line 700), but it isn't necessary to hit with every pellet at that 7.2 per pellet damage. If 14 pellets hit within 15m, it's a kill; if just 7-13 hit then a single follow up shot will be adequate to finish the target off. I don't know how to calculate the one hit kill distance, but I'm sure

@Zer0Cod3x

or any other Geometry genius can help out with that. ^^

Choose depending on map.

Argonne you can run the Backbored without fear, since most ranges you'll be firing at won't need that reduced pellet dispersion.

On a map like Suez or Amiens the Hunter may fare better since you still have CQB in buildings but you may need to shoot at people at further ranges.

On maps with less some less dense areas but with somewhat tight capture areas like St Quentin you should run the 10A.

Based on 3000~ kills with the M97 over different variants.
