Looks like the darts get a decent nerf in the latest CTE patch notes:

Ranken Darts:
Increased reload time from 12 to 15 seconds
Decreased blast damage from 20 to 16.7
Decreased blastradius from 3 to 1.5 meters
Direct damage no longer hurts soldiers


Kind of odd that a dart falling on your head no longer hurts you.....


This HAS to come in the April patch. The Trench Fighter has probably been the most broken thing in all of BF1 so far (for all the reasons mentioned here). Maybe soon we can resume to some sanity.

Actually surprises me that DICE finally addresses it. Far too late.
DICE has a tendency to ignore blatant problems that every average infantry player on conquest vehicle maps faces, that cant be countered nor avoided well with the tools provided by the game.

Look, I'm all for fixing balance problems, but that isn't a patch that will do so. The rifle buff is a good start, but really, we all know the numbers, we know that the rifles don't actually need a buff, other than as a badly needed incentive to actually use them (you know, beyond the fact that not using them makes planes too strong).... Then there's the fact they left the underloved dogfighter and bomber killer loadouts untouched, likewise the tailgunner MG is still boredom simulator 2017, randoms still spawn in plane seats and destroy teamwork, fighter cannons are useless against infy especially the DF with its awesome zoom that lets you see exactly how much the spread is making your first few shots into warning shots and how much the low velocity makes it easy for infy to dodge subsequent bullets.....etc etc.

If it's balance, teamwork, fun gameplay for all and reward for skill that you're after, this is not the patch you're looking for. But if what you want is for the whole fighter class to suck... hey, celebrate. We're heading back to the crappy BF4 stealth jet meta.

I'm very fine with the BF4 Stealth Jet meta, if it means the king of the skies is untouchable by ground but can't do shit to them either. Anything that can consistently bomb and farm infantry well should be proportionally subject to retaliation by said infantry, and if things that cannot be countered by infantry well, they shouldn't have a significant impact on what's going on at the ground level. This should be the basic core of vehicle vs infantry combat


Looks like DICE is finally following this principle with the Trench Fighter and went with the latter option. A good step in the right direction, the issue with re balancing other planes is an entirely separate matter

The thing where it was potato against anything except planes, so the only reason you'd take one is if the enemy forced you to do so by taking one themselves...

The idea here is not to fix the game for infy and spoil it for pilots. The idea is to make it fun for BOTH.

No, it isn't. You should be able to see by now how changes to trench fighter effect the balance of the other planes and infy directly.

And they should stay that way. If you want to shoot infantry with your vehicle's primary, take the Ground Support Attack Plane


And there's the problem with the BF4 stealth meta. You choose attack plane since fighter is useless against most targets. Enemy takes fighter because they need to rock-paper-scissors your attack plane. You take fighter to kill other fighter. Now you are bored.

It doesn't need a secondary, it needs a (spread) buff to its primary since right now it's a weapon with a scope that allows you to see targets you can't hit. The 'secondary' of instant HP is amazing and allows the pilot to stay on station and sustaining damage longer while supporting ground troops.... You know... If it could support anything with that cruddy cannon.

Making the main cannons good against infantry would be silly, they're nearly the last Plane weapon that should be doing that. If anyone has alternate secondary ideas I'd love to hear them, but the TG would probably work really well for this variant, scope plus good AA damage, and the ability to engage ground if really needed (and really skilled).
