[Hypothetical] If the Rank 10 weapons were to get variants

Today, DICE LA's weapon designer held a Q&A on reddit (he edited to say he's going off for the night, but will continue later). Among other interesting things, the topic of Rank 10 guns, their effectiveness, and them (ideally) getting variants was brought up by the community a few times.

Which got me thinking, what would their variants be? There's a lot to factor in here: the weapon's role, the roles of other weapons in its class and what their variants are, what would actually be useful, what may be too useful (I'm looking at you, Automatico Experimental), what fits the weapon's model and real-world traits (i.e. extended mag), and so forth. I came up with what I think is a pretty solid set of variants, but I'd like input and opinions from those who know the intricacies of them the best, meaning all of you guys.


  • Hellriegel - Factory / Trench / Optical (currently actually Storm)
  • M1906 - Factory / Optical / Marksman (currently actually Marksman w/o scope)
  • Huot - Low Weight / Optical / Gunner
  • Martini-Henry - Rifleman / Carbine / Marksman


As a potential alternate to the Huot's Optical variant, Experimental (Optical sights and three-round burst). Partly because I'm curious as to how a burst-fire MG would work.

As a potential alternate to the Martini-Henry's Carbine variant, Trench. Like the R1895, that means a closer-ranged variant chambered for different ammo. In this case, buckshot, making it a Blunderbuss Shotgun.

Hellriegel - Factory / Trench / Optical (currently actually Storm)
Would be positively filthy for close range Hip-fire, moreso than it already is.
Could essentially become a 60 round Assault Rifle.

Huot - Low Weight / Optical / Gunner
Some kind of magnified sight would certainly benefit this Machine Gun's role; I'd actually vote Telescopic instead.
An extended magazine would certainly be welcomed.

the Sebstalder is quiet good since it can 3hit kill at any distanc ,but In my opinion i actually thikn the sweeper is better, its got a really really fast firerate that can beat alll those Noobmaticos, Helregall adn shitguns in close quarters , and its also really accurate out to like l;ong range,. overall great allround gun, jsut my 2$ tho

You can look through the file browser to see what was planned for each one.

Hellriegel appears to have been Factory, Storm, and Optical.

1906 appears to have been Factory, Marksman, and Sniper.

Huot appears to have been Low Weight, Optical, and Trench.

Martini-Henry appears to have been Infantry, Carbine, and Marksman.

Without the Storm bonuses the Hellriegel currently has, I don't think it would be as crazy as you're making it sound.

I'm pretty sure Telescopic = Gunner. I'm not sure why the Hotchkiss and BAR have different names for the same thing; did the Hotchkiss get a different name purely because it has a Tripod? Gunner does not have Extended Mags, that's Suppressive; Gunner/Telescopic is Square Scope and Bipod.

Interesting. It's already such an all-round gun, it really doesn't deserve the further ease-of-use Storm gives, which is likely why it's so overused and seen as OP. Trench would also be a bit more diverse, fitting the middle-of-the-road gun; Factory/Trench/Optical is the same set used by the all-round Cei, for example.

That's... what? Telescopic is just "LMG Marksman", isn't it? They definitely use the same scope model, though "SLR Marksman" does use its unique "mini-Sniper" scope model. Marksman and Sniper would actually be a fantastic pairing.

Trench instead of a proper scope would definitely be a mistake. Only two MGs have the Marksman high-zoom scope, one being the Hotchkiss (good) and the other being the... BAR, for whatever reason. Marksman scope (Gunner/Telescopic) for the Huot would be perfect, pairing up well with the Hotchkiss.

It's not like there are any other options for the M-H, besides Sniper (lol) or a unique ammo type.

Well the Storm just mitigates Recoil pull, while the Trench significantly improves all Hip-fire categories (except Spread Decrease).

Automatico Storm vs. Trench

The comparison illustrates the drastic differences between the Storm and Trench variations (assuming the same would be applied to the Hellriegel). Without some alterations, a straight Hellriegel Trench that is 33% better in all but one Hip-fire category would be an insanely good Close Quarters choice.

Gunner does not have Extended Mags, that's Suppressive; Gunner/Telescopic is Square Scope and Bipod.

Ah yes, my mistake. I'd still love a Gunner/ Telescopic and Suppressive version alongside the Low-Weight though.

True. Storm with the mag, and a factory variant with the drum magazine. This would decrease the dominance of the Hellriegel to reasonable amounts. It would likely also make RDs statements concerning SMG usage more true (in what world is a 40% usage of a weapon variant, another 40% with three variants and 20% with three variants again an even usage?).

As for the rest, a marksman/sniper variant for the 1906 would make sense, or a trench variant maybe. This would be in line with not making the rank 10 weapons a clear upgrade of other weapons. However, if they want to stick to authenticity and the variant system there are bound to be some obsolete weapons.
You could have a trench Huot as well, to distinguish it a bit more from the Lewis, I guess.

What I do not want to see are optical variants, since the RDS are prone to a lot of visual and animation drawbacks when moving and shooting. Unless that gets reworked of course.

I've been pestering our resident gameplay designer for months about getting level 10 variants but haven't gotten anywhere :(


The only hangup I see on this (aside from devs potentially being stubborn) is War Bonds have to be added so that every player still gets enough to unlock all the new variants. Though worst case scenario they could just be unlocked at Rank 10 without any WBs needed. And while the Rank 10 guns aren't awful, they're also not ideal. The Luger and Huot are very much accuracy-based, long range weapons, yet neither can use optics. The former missing its Sniper variant also gives us only one Sniper variant for SLRs, and Support only has two Telescopic/Gunner MGs, one of which is the BAR which only half counts.

As for the Hellriegel, having its 20-round stick mag for Factory and (Storm/Trench/Optical), with the third variant as Extended with the drum would have been ideal, but sadly it's probably too late for that.
