Are there specific weak points on the vehicles? Once in a while I will hit a tank and it will some absurd amount of damage relative to regular shots

This sounds accurate. While I don't have physical proof, my own experience is all I can draw from. In game I have altered my hitmarker colors to the following: yellow for a standard hitmarker, blue for a headshot (critical shot), and red as the kill. This transfers over to the damage against vehicles as well. I can recall on multiple occasions where a blue, square-shaped hitmarker appeared when targeting tanks indicating a critical hit was made. Component damage certainly exists in BF1 where tracks, gunner positions, wings, and engines can be disabled by intentionally damaging those locations on vehicles. I just can't confirm whether those impacts inflict more damage than a standard hit. This is where material multipliers enters the equation, a system where damage outputs are altered based on a unique value that can be different for each vehicle, gadget, and projectile.
To Aim Assist or not to Aim Assist, that is the question.

Nope. Aim Assist or bust; here's why:

The headshot marker means that you scored a perpendicular (or rather, max damage) hit. It does not take weak spots into account, it just means that you hit at a good angle.

And reading Youtube comments still gives me Turbo Cancer.

It really is quite frustrating when Helen Keller sets up her LMG in the only doorway in/out of an area.

What kind of question is that? Since when is cheese ever a bad idea?

Hardline is a fun and sometimes silly Cops and Robbers sorta thing and I think that's great. Or it would be if it didn't suck.

Also even if you score a "critical hit" of say damaging a component (gun or whatever) it doesn't mean you've necessarily knocked off that much more HP. I really don't love all of these fancy flame effects, they just confuse the issue. As far as I can tell the torn up plate with flames coming off the front is purely a cosmetic thing for eg, something that isn't even linked to the total health of the tank!

Agreed, it's very intuitive and arguably provides the player with false information, which is a really bad thing.

The effects are fine in themselves, but not actually having them linked to health or critical states is bad. Sure, they are "linked" in the sense that you need to take damage/crits for them to appear, but clearing the crits/restoring health doesn't (always) make them disappear.

And to the discussion:

What might the general consensus be for the Rocket Gun to instakill Fighter and Attack Planes? While not necessarily comparable to the RPG or SMAW of BF3 and BF4, the shoulder-fired straight line trajectory launchers encompassed the capability of immediately destroying aircraft with one impact. This is also a puzzling decision for inhibiting the Rocket Gun's potential lethality against strafing runs.
It should be instakilling any plane if you land a hit. I always welcome more options for infantry to seriously disable/kill aircraft in this game

If you're flying low enough for an AT Rocket Gun to hit you, he honestly deserves the kill and you deserve to be dead. End of story.

Also, if support bro repairs your tank to 100% he won't clear the damage status on your gunner weapons so they can still show damage.

Like does engine damage even grant a permanent speed debuff until the damage is cleared? Does it deal more damage than a standard hit?

Who knows because no private servers :cursing:

Derping air vehicles with tanks in BF1 is pretty amazing too but it's not trivial to pull off and it requires that the pilot be flying pretty low, or the tank finding an epic reverse slope.

Rocket gun should def be a OHK vs planes.

Attack Planes and Fighters, most definitely. But the Bombers are a much larger target with a serious speed impediment in comparison. I have hit Attack Planes with the Rocket Gun but the damage dealt was only something in the neighborhood of 35 damage and the Bomber roughly 25. For how challenging a shot it is to actually impact a plane, the result is simply mediocre.

Yeah but the engagement envelope of the rocket guns means that the pilot can easily make sure he never makes himself a target of opportunity for derping by tanks and rocket guns.

If you fly even a little high and don't stick around stall it is very rare that you will ever get hit by anti-tank weapons.

If a pilot decides to drag his landing gear along the ground just above stall speed he should be rewarded with derping.

I've always hated these totally absurd damage mitigations for "balance" like the rhib boat being able to survive a bunch of AT weapon hits.

Especially bad for air vehicles where the biggest aspect of them is their ability to chose their engagements: if you play stupid games you should win stupid prizes.

I'm a nobody, but I'd be quite for that. As it is I feel so ridiculously helpless as any infantry class against planes. Even mounting your MG and pouring 50+ rounds into a plane coming at you does marginal damage and just makes you an easy target. Even if there's a huge skill curve, some kind of infantry weapon that can give them pause would be nice.
