About the whole 'france not being in the vanilla game'-thing

Why do people care so much about something that is essentially nothing but a character skin & VO combination?

So many mechanics and basic concepts are being changed in BF1. I don't know about you guys, but I am extremely anxious (or even blatantly scared) at how that is going to play out and affect the gameplay.

Meanwhile, all I see in mainstream discussions is marketing-related things - most notably the france-discussion.

..... :|

You tell me.

So many people kept talking about "honoring WWI" or "paying respects to The Great War" and when DICE delivered on their promise of "not a documentary but a Battlefield set in WWI" people got angry.

As if other Battlefields didn't somehow make war into something fun.

I really do not see why people thought DICE would do something that would Press F to Pay Respects to a war that ended a century ago with no living participant remaining.

Meanwhile active soldiers and their conflicts are okay to be used as wargame material.

okay....

Reddit and Konami will rewrite the records... And I will be demonized in human memory. But... The thirst for good gameplay that I have planted will infest MGO3. No one can stop it now. The Rebalance Mod will unleash that thirst unto the future.

Ok how about putting it this way: Why is their an entire part/faction of the game ...

Because ->

Yup...

It is fascinating, and sometimes perhaps a bit frustrating, how vastly different people's views and thoughts on such subjects can be.
Let's take Moh:WF as an example. Remember when that group of navy seals almost got put on trial for being willing to give insight in the more 'secretive' parts of combat; because apparently that is what a game is all about and makes it good?

I guess the current state of that game is, ironically enough, a good contribution to my view on that

Anyway it'll probably just be the free dlc mentioned in the preorder bonus, so i don't see the issue in any case.

I know it's not as common as we'd love for it to be, but I think many of us for once agree with LevelCap: Battlefield 1 Unrealistic? Game Realism vs Game Fun - YouTube

I do hope, however, that there will be all class bolt rifles. Really loved the all-kit carbines, shotguns and DMRs in BF4, although I think I loved the PDWs even more after their final rebalancing. Think of the possibilities! "Bolt-Action (plus handguns) Only" servers with all classes present!

Of course, this ignores the non-constant cross-sectional first moment of area across the chest as well as non-constant material properties of the boob; it would be difficult to perform a more detailed analysis (as in, I'd have to have a shape function AND I'd need to derive a function for elastic modulus as a function of lateral breast coordinate) but whatever. It's 2am and I'm lazy.

You should also answer this question I had posed in that thread: Would you be willing to pay your surgeon more if he was going to use a chainsaw for the opening incision of surgery? Clearly using a chainsaw isn't truly suited for surgery but that doesn't really matter. If he's "skilled" enough to be able to use the wrong tools of the trade, he should be rewarded for that skill right?

if they make bolt action rifles all-class, they should probably give 'em the scout elite damage model or something similar, as otherwise they wouldn't make much sense when paired against the scout rifles.

I think it would indeed be very tricky to balance.

Hey, couldn't it be an idea to give all classes access to the already existing driver-class weapons? Broomhandle carbines and (potentially) Artillery Lugers and such stuff.

The kind-of-awkward mix of sticking to it's historical guns and pretty-much disregarding them entirely at this point is annoying me a little, probably more than it should

Your expectations of this being a full historically accurate game should've gone away when we saw parachutes and massive gun-bearing zeppelins.

You're right, they probably should have but they didn't :pinch: :P
Like I said I don't think it'll make much of a difference overall, it's just the part of me that catalogued a box full of First World War objects going "BUT IT ISN'T RIGHT HHHHNNNNGGGG!!!" :D
But Battlefield has never been particularly true to real life, outside of the guns/vehicles/gadgets being modeled after real life things.

Players in BF1 can use LMGs by themselves (on the move while standing, no less), jump between the seats in two-seater planes and fly giant blimps dropping bombs and raining lead on the battlefield and no-one cares, but people get their nickers in a twist over how many classes have bolt action rifles as their primary weapon.

Up until now the disproportional amount of LMGs, BAs and other specialist gear hasn't been a problem in BF titles. IMO there is some substance behind the complaints about BAs (in the flavor/feel of the game sense), but the game is a BF game first and a WW1 game second. The "problem" has been blown out of proportion because the internet likes complaining and people ar focusing on that instead of actually important things like if there will finally be a matchmaking system.

And reading Youtube comments still gives me Turbo Cancer.

It really is quite frustrating when Helen Keller sets up her LMG in the only doorway in/out of an area.

What kind of question is that? Since when is cheese ever a bad idea?

Don't get me wrong, I know Battlefield has always err'd to the side of what I like to call "Realism", and you're right; It's never bothered me before. I wouldn't really say it's bothering me now but, like I said, there is still that little voice in my head going "IT'S ALL WROOOOOOOOOONG!!!" :pinch: :D

@ViperFTW
Like I said, I get why you/people don't like it and it's perfectly understandable. I wouldn't mind BAs/semis being more of the norm in BF1 than in previous BFs, it would certainly be interesting and refreshing.

That said, I still think the game will be fun _and_ we don't know very much about the game yet and things can still change. It would not surprise me if there are some all-kit medium range BAs; all-kit weapons have featured in most (all?) of the recent games and are arguably good for balance.

Again I should make clear that I'm in the "give everyone BAs" camp ONLY because I personally prefer All-Kits, and the only possible choice for All-Kits that I can think of that will not obliterate class "balance" is the standard-issue infantry BA rifles that is not the Sniper variant. Especially since BF3 / BF4 All-Kits look to become class-specific in BF1 (Shotguns -> Assault, semi-auto rifles -> Medic, PDWs -> Assault, while for now there is no equivalent of the Carbine).

Below is how I would have gone about this. It means nothing but just letting you know what my thought process is.

In general terms, use "Carbine" versions of the main BA rifles in service. Spread and Damage Model: use the same as the Medic Class semi-auto rifles, so 3HK to body at any range. RoF: use the same animation as the Scout Class BA rifles.

Germany: Mauser K98a | C&Rsenal

Commonwealth: 2 possibilities.

#1 Pattern 1914 Enfield | C&Rsenal

#2 Move the SMLE Mk3 to this weapon class, with the above "general terms" damage model. Change the Scout Class to the Ross Rifle | C&Rsenal (whose failures as a front-line infantry rifle PRECISELY made it an excellent Sniper weapon)

I'm sure other equivalents can be found, as cut-down "Carbine" versions of the main battle rifles were fairly common due to the needs of Cavalry troopers.

Now, onto the question as to WHY the classes would pick these "Carbines" vs. what they have available to their own class....

Assault: Much-improved mid-range performance vs. SMGs and Shotguns.

Medic: Not recommended, as according to the above I have the "Carbines" doing the same damage but much slower RoF. I'd use it just for familiarity purpose, but that's probably not a good enough reason.

Support: Gaining the ability to do bayonet-charges, as LMGs cannot mount bayonets at the moment.

Scout: Again, not recommended as according to the above I have the "Carbines" do worse damage but with the same RoF. Then again, why did BF4 Recons use DMRs instead of BA rifles? Maybe give these "Carbines" better hipfire than their full-size Sniper cousins?

Anyways, these are just my thoughts, so don't read too much into them. In the end, it's DICE's game, while the decision to buy or not is my own.
