BF1: Class discussion

So, based on youtuber inside information (Jackfrags and the like), here's what we know so far:

  • Assault class: Apparently both an anti-infantry and anti-vehicle class in one. They get SMGs and shotguns, while the only confirmed gadget so far is an anti-tank grenade. One could venture that they'd also get gas grenades.
  • Medic class: Now split from the assault class. Their weapons are semi-automatic rifles, and their gadgets are - big surprise - a medpack and defibs syringe.
  • Support class: Pretty much the same as the BF4 variant. However, they now have the only long ranged automatic weapons in the game (LMGs), and in addition to the ammo bag they apparently also get the repair tool.
  • Scout class: They get bolt action rifles and work pretty much the same as the Recon from earlier. Their only confirmed gadget is C4 TNT. I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and guess that they might get some kind of BC2-style artillery barrage with binoculars.
In addition to these, there's now also a "pilot" and "tank driver" class which you become if you spawn in one of those vehicles. But it's anyone's guess what this entails: do they just get a pistol as a sidearm? Do they get a repair tool like the support class? Can you even get out of vehicles? Can other classes jump into a tank and keep their class?

What you do think of this so far? It's interesting that they removed the engineer class (though without rocket launchers they'd be pretty useless anyway), and gave the repair tool to the support class. I'm looking forward to seeing how tanks are meant to be dealt with: is the anti-tank rifle a battle pickup, a gadget or can it be equipped as a primary weapon? If it's a battle pickup, it looks like the only reliable way of taking out tanks is charging in with C4 and anti-tank grenades.

as is like this, i feel like i can use all the classes, especially medic and scout(kinda like in bf4) and maybe a bit less support, but i will still use him way more than in bf4.

pilot and driver will definitely have only a pistol and i'll go on a lim and say they can use only one of the 2 standard gadgets of your class(let's be clear, i believe the pilot class is an automatic class, not a chosen one, kinda like how in aftermath svangere or gun master you'd get a couple of things from your desired loadout) but that's all speculation, although it's how i would like to see it be(unless they have special gadgets)

as for entering vehicles, if you couldn't get in a stranded tank or jeep that would break the gameplay pace, and laars said a couple times how they are looking at what improves and damages game pace, i doubt you cannot at least drive with stranded vehicles, although i doubt you can shoot with the main guns.

Where did you get the weapon info though? I though the medic would run the MPs while the Assault would get the Bolt action rifles...

That said, yeah the charges are confirmed for the assault but as are the WW1 equivalent of anti-materiel rifles. Basically a rifle that can penetrate armour.

In a conversation about tanker class and its primary outside a tank it was mentioned "It's got a pistol stock" and ".... it's like a weak carbine". So that's something.

The discussion was someone didn't like the idea of a "gimped" class and a dev responding in skype.

The big question on my mind since first hearing of a potential WW1 setting has been how the portable machineguns would balanced against the other classes. An LMG is going to offer overwhelming firepower against virtually anything else of that era outside of CQB or long range situations, essentially they would be like assault rifles in BF4 but without much else that could effectively stand up to them in a firefight.

Imagine if BF4 had no assault rifles or carbines at all. Your only two automatic weapons would be LMGs and SMGs, everyone else is stuck using either a DMR or a bolt-action. SMGs obviously are not going to be very effective beyond CQB, same story for the alternative choice of shotguns. Now imagine you've only got either a DMR or bolt-action while all the support guys are running around with their usual LMGs. While LMGs have ARs/carbines to deal with, once those are removed from the equation you're essentially stuck either trying to maneuver into SMG/shotgun range or be limited to only semi-automatic rifle fire at best. Meanwhile this support guy has a bottomless ammo crate and a big automatic weapon that he will happily spam at you while you're stuck trying to accurately aim a DMR or bolt-action. I have a feeling the LMG class is going to be heavily changed from BF4 to keep it from becoming as OP as it potentially could be.

Past the potential balancing issues of support suddenly being the only class to have an automatic weapon effective past 50m or so, I'm excited to see what they come up with for this game. WW1 being almost untouched by games previously, there's a huge amount of room to get creative with the overall experience. I have a feeling we will see an evolution of carrier assault that swaps the aircraft carriers for large battleships. The whole titan assault concept could also be turned into a trench assault type thing where each team is attempting to gain access into an underground bunker inside the enemy's trench network in order to detonate objectives or something. They could do so much with that game mode alone that I hope they take full advantage of.
